# Direct Printing, Shrink Sleeve or Label: How to Brand an Aluminium Body Spray Can

Print directly onto an aluminium body spray can when the run is short, when it is split across several designs, or when the date cannot move. Choose a shrink sleeve or a label when you are filling tens of thousands of cans of one design, when the artwork has to hide the can's own colour completely, or when the brand needs real foil. The two can work together: direct printing to test a range, then sleeves or factory-printed cans for the design that sells.

All three methods work. They differ in what they cost to set up, how the finished can looks and feels, and how quickly a new design can reach the shelf. This guide compares them for aerosol and body spray cans, then covers the two things that catch brands out with direct printing: gold colours and can coatings.

Sun Studio belongs to the same Dubai group as PRO TECHnology, which distributes LSINC equipment in the Middle East, so read our view of the machine with that in mind. Direct printing is also the method we sell, so we have set out plainly what a sleeve or a label does better.

This article is about choosing the method. Minimum order, filled cans, who supplies the cans, turnaround and what to send for a quote are answered on our page for [aluminium can printing in Dubai](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/aluminium-can-printing-dubai/).

## The three methods at a glance

Each method puts the artwork in a different place: on the can itself, on a film around the can, or on a label stuck to the can.

- **Direct UV printing**: the can turns under an inkjet printhead and the ink cures on the can itself. There is no tooling, Sun Studio sets no minimum, and a new design is a new file. It suits short runs, several designs and fixed dates. Its limits: it prints the straight-walled part of the can only, gold is simulated in ink, and adhesion depends on the can's coating.
- **Shrink sleeve**: a printed plastic tube dropped over the can and shrunk to fit with heat. It gives full coverage in photographic colour, hides any can colour, can follow a shoulder or a taper, and is very cheap per can on long runs. Its limits: a bonded seam, an added layer of material over the aluminium, and, when it is printed conventionally, tooling for every design.
- **Pressure-sensitive label**: printed, die-cut and applied by machine or by hand. It is the simplest route, it is opaque over any can colour, and a label converter can add real foil or metallic ink. Its limits: a leading and a trailing edge, and the look of a labelled can instead of a printed one.

## What a sleeve or a label costs beyond the unit price

Sleeves and labels earn their place. For a brand filling the same design month after month, full coverage and a very low unit cost are strong reasons to stay with them. Their costs are structural, not obvious. Conventionally printed sleeves and labels commit the artwork to plates or cylinders before anything is printed, so every design carries its own set-up. Digitally printed labels and sleeves avoid the plates, so ask your converter what it offers, but the film or the label still has to be made, delivered and applied. Either way a layer of material goes over the can, which means an edge: a sleeve has a bonded seam and a label has a leading and a trailing edge. In the heat of a Dubai warehouse or a car boot, an edge is where lifting starts if it starts anywhere. Both routes also put a separate converter, with its own lead time, between you and a finished can, and a launch may already be late. And if you want four designs in a run of a thousand, a conventional route means four set-ups against very small quantities each.

Direct printing changes that arithmetic. The artwork lives in a file, not on a plate, so a second design costs a file change, not new tooling. That is the whole reason short runs of several designs behave differently on digital UV kit than they do on a conventional packaging line. The same logic sits behind [screen printing minimum order quantities](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/screen-printing-minimum-order-quantities-uae/).

## What direct printing does differently: a 360 degree wrap with no seam

In direct printing the can is held at both ends and turned at a controlled speed under a fixed printhead, and the artwork is laid onto the can in one continuous operation. The ink cures under UV light as it is applied, so the can comes off the press dry and ready to handle. There is no wrap, no adhesive, no shrink tunnel and no seam: the artwork ends where it began.

Sun Studio prints cans on the LSINC PeriQ360 or the LSINC PeriOne. The wrap closes on itself, so the join is a matter of registration, not a physical seam: with the diameter and the rotation set correctly there is nothing to see. Straight-walled cans are the easy case. On a can with a shoulder, a taper or a domed base we define the printable band when we quote, because the head follows a cylinder, not a profile that changes as it goes. That is one point to a shrink sleeve, which can follow a shoulder where a cylindrical press cannot.

The same principle covers tumblers, bottles and drinkware, which we print as part of our [cylindrical and 360 degree printing service](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/cylindrical-printing-dubai/). The mechanics are set out in [how 360° bottle printing works](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/cylindrical-printing-dubai-bottles-cans-tumblers/).

## Several designs in one short run: the Ajmal cans

Ajmal Perfumes, one of the GCC's long-established perfume manufacturers, ran a full aerosol job with Sun Studio: four designs (Amber Tide, Mystic Bliss, Tropical Mango and Pear Hug) printed full-wrap directly onto the aluminium cans. The job is written up in [the Ajmal Perfumes aerosol can case study](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/ajmal-perfumes-aerosol-can-printing/).

The point of that job was not the printing of any single can. It was that four designs came out of one production run, with brand colour and a gold logo holding consistently from can to can and design to design. On a conventionally printed sleeve, each of those designs would normally carry its own plates or cylinders and whatever minimum quantity the converter sets. Here they were four files.

## Speed: 1,000 cans in two days for Beautyworld

PRO TECHnology, a company in the same Dubai group as Sun Studio, needed a giveaway for its stand at Beautyworld at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The requirement was 1,000 full-wrap aluminium body spray cans across several artworks, and the stand date was not moving. The job is described in [the Beautyworld aluminium can case study](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/pro-technology-aluminium-can-printing-beautyworld/).

*A thousand cans in two days for a Beautyworld stand, several artworks through one production run.*

They were produced in two days, with no minimum order and no plates, screens or sleeves to make first. That is the case where direct printing wins: a fixed event date, several artworks, and a quantity that is small by a packaging converter's standards but too large to do by hand. Exhibition work generally runs to this rhythm: see [exhibition and event printing in Dubai](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/exhibition-event-printing-dubai/) for how those deadlines usually fall.

## Gold and metallic brand colours on a metallic can

This is the difficult part of direct can printing. UV inkjet builds colour from CMYK plus white. It has no metallic ink, and it is not foil. A gold logo is therefore printed as a colour that reads as gold, a warm ochre-to-brown blend, and how convincing it looks depends heavily on what sits behind it.

On a bare or brushed aluminium can that works in your favour: the metal's own reflectivity shows through and does much of the work, so the printed gold looks metallic because the can is metallic. On a can with a solid coloured basecoat the underlying shine is gone, and gold printed straight onto it reads flatter than a foil or a metallic sleeve would. If the brand depends on a mirror-bright gold over a coloured can, a foiled label or a metallic sleeve is the better tool. Where a design needs opacity or accurate colour on a dark or coloured can, white ink is laid down first as a base and the colour printed over it, an extra ink layer that shows up in [what drives a UV printing quote](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-printing-cost-in-dubai/).

Send the can and the artwork together and ask for a printed sample before committing a run.

Gold and metallics are the one area where an on-screen proof tells you very little.

*Printed onto the aluminium itself, so there is no sleeve seam running down the back of the can.*

The press in that clip is the [LSINC PeriQ360](https://www.lsinc.com/periq-360), a cylindrical direct-to-object printer built for round containers. Sun Studio runs it in Al Quoz alongside the LSINC PeriOne. Both were supplied by [PRO TECHnology](https://www.protechnology.ae/), the group company that LSINC named as its dealer for the Middle East and North Africa in December 2023. Our article on [how the LSINC PeriQ360 prints a 360 degree wrap](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/lsinc-periq360-360-bottle-printing-dubai/) covers the machine itself.

## Filled and pressurised cans are handled differently from empties

Direct printing works on filled and empty cans alike. What changes is the handling. An empty can is light, easy to jig and forgiving. A filled aerosol is a pressurised vessel with propellant inside it: it weighs more, so jigging and rotation speed change, it cannot be knocked about, and it is stored and moved to its own safety requirements.

LED-UV curing is what makes it possible. The ink is hardened by UV light and there is no oven stage, so the process adds very little heat to a filled can. The same property lets Sun Studio print sealed candles and coated bottles. Expect the valve and actuator areas to be kept out of the printable band. What to tell us about the fill is on the service page linked above.

## Coatings decide whether a direct print holds

A shrink sleeve holds by its own tension, so the coating on the can matters little to it. A direct print bonds to that coating, so it matters a great deal. Hardly any can reaches us as bare aluminium: most have a basecoat, a lacquer or an overvarnish, and the ink has to grip that layer, not the metal. A silicone-bearing slip additive in an overvarnish is a common cause of poor adhesion, and it is invisible until you print. Our article on [how bare, anodised and powder-coated aluminium take UV ink](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/premium-uv-printing-in-dubai-on-glass-metal-wood-bottles/) explains how each metal finish behaves.

This is why a sample can from the same batch as the production run matters. Cans from a different supplier, or from the same supplier's different coating lot, can behave differently. We test adhesion on the actual can before any quantity is run, and where a coating rejects ink the answer is surface preparation, not more ink. The principles are set out in [UV ink adhesion and pre-treatment](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-ink-adhesion-and-pre-treatment-dubai/).

Once cured and properly bonded, the print is a hard polymer film on the can. It handles normal retail and transit use. It is not indestructible under deliberate abrasion, and a body spray that lives in a handbag for a year will show wear on the highest points of the can before anywhere else. Wet hands, gym bags and contact with the fragrance itself are covered in [how printed cans and bottles are checked for alcohol resistance](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/alcohol-resistant-perfume-bottle-printing-dubai/#body-spray-and-aerosol-cans).

## When a sleeve or a label is the better choice

At true mass-market volumes direct printing is not the cheapest route. If you are running tens or hundreds of thousands of identical cans for retail distribution, printed or sleeved cans ordered from the can manufacturer will normally cost far less per can. The tooling cost that looks painful across a thousand units all but disappears across a very large run, and a converter's line is built for a throughput that a short-run digital press is not.

Volume is not the only reason. A sleeve or a label is also the better choice when the artwork must hide the can completely (a pale design on a dark stock can, for example), when the brand needs real foil or a metallic film, or when the design has to run over a shoulder that a cylindrical press cannot reach.

Direct printing wins on three things specifically: short runs, several designs from one set-up, and speed. A launch sample set, a private-label range being tested before commitment, four fragrance variants at a thousand each, an event giveaway with a fixed date. A national retail rollout of a single design is not on that list.

A sensible pattern for a growing fragrance brand is to use direct printing to test the range and the artwork, then move the design that sells to sleeves or factory-printed cans once the volume justifies the tooling. The wider comparison between print processes is in [UV versus screen, pad and sublimation printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-vs-screen-vs-pad-vs-sublimation-printing-uae/).

## Common questions

### Is direct printing or a shrink sleeve cheaper for aluminium spray cans?

It depends on the run. As a rule of thumb, direct printing costs less overall at around a thousand cans or when the run is split across several designs, because there is no tooling to pay for. At tens or hundreds of thousands of one design, a sleeve or a factory-printed can costs far less per can. In between, ask for both quotes and compare the total, tooling included.

### Why does printed gold look different on a bare can and on a coloured can?

The gold is a colour simulated in ink, not metallic ink and not foil. On bare or brushed aluminium the metal reflects through the ink, so the gold looks metallic. On a solid coloured basecoat nothing reflects from underneath, so the same gold reads flatter. Approve it on a printed sample of your own can, never on a screen.

### Why does ink fail on some lacquered cans, and how is that found before a run?

The ink bonds to the can's basecoat, lacquer or overvarnish, not to the aluminium. Some overvarnishes carry a silicone slip additive that stops ink gripping, and it cannot be seen. We print and test a sample can from the same batch as the production run before any quantity is printed. Where a coating rejects ink, the fix is surface preparation.

### What can a sleeve or a label do that direct printing cannot?

Three things. A sleeve or a label is opaque over any can colour without relying on a white ink base. A converter can add real foil or metallic ink, which UV inkjet does not have. A shrink sleeve can also follow a shoulder or a taper, where a cylindrical press prints the straight wall of the can only.
