## Crystal engraving in Dubai: what Sun Studio makes

**Sun Studio engraves, sandblasts and prints crystal in Dubai.** A photograph, a logo, a building or a stadium can be laser engraved in 3D inside a clear crystal block, frosted onto its face by sandblasting or a surface laser, or printed in full colour with UV ink, and the methods can be combined on one piece. ## Four ways to mark crystal: 3D laser, surface laser, sandblasting and UV printing

The four methods do different jobs. A laser and a sandblaster both turn clear crystal white, so they make frost and depth, not colour. UV printing is the only one of the four that adds colour, and the best pieces often use two of them.

## How does 3D laser engraving inside crystal work?

A 3D crystal engraver focuses a green laser to a point inside the block. At that point, and only there, the energy makes a microscopic fracture that catches the light as a white dot. The machine places thousands of these points, layer by layer through the depth of the crystal, until together they form the image. The beam passes through the surface without marking it, so the outside of the block stays perfectly smooth. The technique is also called subsurface or inner laser engraving.

What decides the result:

- **The crystal.** Engraving inside is done in optical crystal, often called K9: clear, free of bubbles and even enough for every point to land cleanly.
- **The file.** A true 3D model of a building, a stadium, a product or a person gives real depth that changes as you walk around the piece. A photograph is engraved as a flat layer, or given a shallow relief so faces gain some volume.
- **Point density.** More points give smoother tones, brighter whites and finer detail, and take longer to engrave.
- **Light.** The points glow when light comes from below or behind, which is why an LED base makes such a difference.

## Photo crystals: family, wedding and pet portraits

A photo crystal is a photograph engraved inside a crystal block, a heart or an iceberg. It is the most personal thing we make in crystal: a wedding portrait, a newborn with a parent, a family with the dog, a pet that has passed, a graduation or a retirement. A name, a date or a few words can be engraved with it, in English, Arabic or both.

The photograph decides the crystal. A sharp, well-lit picture with the faces large in the frame engraves best. The background is usually removed so the people float on their own, as in the heart below, and no laser can rescue a dark or tiny photo. Send the original file from the phone or the camera, not a screenshot or a picture forwarded through a messaging app.

## 3D models in crystal: buildings, stadiums and products

The same laser engraves a full 3D model, so a building, a stadium, a landmark, a vehicle or a product can sit inside the crystal to scale, with a logo and a line of text beside it. For a real estate developer, the tower or the masterplan in crystal is a launch gift and a handover gift in one. For a sports event it is the venue; for a brand, the product itself.

Two examples on this page:

- **A stadium crystal.** The King Abdullah Sports City stadium engraved in 3D, its stands and roof in fine lines, with the pitch in green on the base and the logos of the stadium and the Ministry of Sport in the corners. Turn the block and the stadium turns with it.
- **A Dubai Opera crystal.** The opera house and its logo engraved inside a rectangular block: a landmark that reads from every side.

## Sandblasting and surface laser engraving on crystal

For a logo, a crest, a border or lettering on the face of the crystal, we frost the surface rather than engrave inside it.

- **Sandblasting** fires a fine abrasive at the crystal through a cut mask. Wherever the mask is open, the surface turns to an even satin frost; blasted longer, the design is carved into the crystal and its edges catch a shadow. It suits bold logos, emblems and large frosted areas, and gives the classic look of a traditional trophy.
- **Surface laser engraving** marks the face directly, line by line, with no mask. It suits fine lettering, names, dates and small text, and changes from one piece to the next with no new tooling.

Both are permanent, because the mark is the crystal itself. Both are white only: when a logo needs its brand colours, it is printed.

## Adding colour: full-colour UV printing on crystal

Colour is where engraving stops and UV printing starts. UV printing is our core trade: ink is laid onto the crystal and cured by UV light as it goes down, so logos keep their exact brand colours, photographs print in full colour and gradients stay smooth. On clear crystal a layer of white ink goes down behind the colour so it reads solid instead of see-through, and printing on the back face puts the crystal between the print and the hand.

## Can engraving and printing be combined on one crystal?

**Yes, and the most striking pieces do it.** The laser gives depth and the print gives colour:

- A building or a stadium engraved in 3D, with the pitch, the water or the logo in colour, as on the stadium crystal, where the green pitch sits under the engraved stands.
- A sandblasted crest or border, with a colour logo or a photograph printed in the centre.
- An engraved award with each winner's name printed in colour on the front.
- A crystal on a printed base, delivered in a [printed velvet box](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/velvet-box-printing-dubai/).

## Crystal shapes, bases and fabrication

Crystal is cut, bevelled and polished into shape before it is engraved or printed. The common shapes:

- **Blocks and cubes,** upright or landscape, for photos and 3D models.
- **Hearts, diamonds and icebergs,** faceted so the edges throw light, for personal gifts and weddings.
- **Award shapes:** stars, octagons, obelisks, towers, flames and plaques, often on a black or clear base.
- **Paperweights, keepsakes and desk pieces** for corporate gifts and souvenirs.
- **Name plates and desk signs** for offices and VIPs.

The base finishes the piece: crystal or black for an award, wood for a warmer gift, or an LED light base that lights the engraving from below. Bespoke shapes and multi-part awards are made to a drawing; describe the shape you have in mind and we confirm what can be made.

## What to send for a crystal quote

- What the crystal is for, and the date it must be in hand
- The quantity, and whether every piece is identical or named

- The shape and size you have in mind, or a photo of a crystal you like
- The wording and the names list exactly as they should appear, in Arabic too if the piece is bilingual

### Can you put Arabic on a crystal?

Yes, engraved or printed, on its own or with English. Send the Arabic as outlined vector artwork so the calligraphy is reproduced exactly.

### Is there a minimum order for crystal?

No. A single photo crystal is a normal order, and so is a run of awards for a whole ceremony.

### How long does a crystal order take?

It depends on the technique, the quantity and whether a 3D model has to be built, so the date comes with the quote. Send the event date first.

### How do I clean a crystal award?

Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly damp if needed. An engraving inside the crystal cannot be touched; on a printed face, keep abrasive cleaners and solvents off the print.
