## How are custom qahwa cups in Dubai printed?

On a cylindrical UV press, in three stages, onto the finished cup. Sun Studio does not print a transfer and apply it. The ink is laid onto the glaze and cured in place.

Pre-treatment comes first. The cup is cleaned, degreased and primed for adhesion on the Modico ModiTreat, a German unit that its manufacturer describes as combining four pre-treatment technologies in one. The scratch and alcohol resistance of the finished print depends on this stage. Printing runs on the LSINC PeriQ360 from the USA, a cylindrical press built for bottles, jars and tubes: it holds the cup on its axis and prints a 360-degree wrap with no seam, which is why a repeating pattern has no visible join. The same press handles the glass cups in a matching gift set. Post-treatment is a varnish pass, UV cured and tested.

The build on a finished cup is thin and deliberate: a primer where the material needs one, a white base where the artwork needs it, the colour layer and, where specified, a clear coat. It is thin enough that the glaze still reads as porcelain, and the white stays opaque under the colour.

## Where should the logo sit on a curved qahwa cup?

On the outer wall, in the middle band, clear of both the rim and the foot. A qahwa cup has a small diameter and a strong curve, which means the eye only ever sees about a third of the circumference at once. A logo that would be safe on a mug can disappear around the side of a finjan.

The practical rule is to design for the visible face first and let anything decorative carry on around the back. Patterns behave better than logos on this shape: a palm motif, a geometric repeat or a brand texture can wrap the whole cup, and because the press prints a continuous 360 there is no seam where the repeat meets itself.

- Keep the mark inside roughly a third of the circumference so it reads without rotating the cup
- Leave the rim clear: lips touch it and any edge is the first place a coating is abraded
- Send vector artwork, not a screenshot; fine type and thin serifs fill in at this scale

## Can you print white, black-on-black and metallic-look effects on porcelain?

Yes, with one qualification on the metallic. White is the layer that makes the rest possible. On a coloured, matte or black cup, CMYK alone would sink into the body colour, so a white base is printed first and the colour goes on top of it. That is how a brand palette stays the same across a white cup, a black cup and a glass tumbler in the same gift set.

Black-on-black and metallic looks are built from spot colour and varnish rather than foil, so what you get is the appearance of metal rather than a metallic ink or a foil stamp. A tone-on-tone effect comes from printing a gloss pass over a matte surface so the mark only appears when the cup catches the light. It is restrained, and it reads as a considered finish, not a logo stamp. Raised and textured effects are available on flat components through the Direct Color Systems UV84, which lays layered white ink and prints braille and raised texture, useful for the box, coaster or tray that comes with the cups.

## Will the print survive washing and daily service?

That is what the first and last stages exist for. The Modico ModiTreat pre-treatment is specified for scratch and alcohol resistant adhesion, and the post-treatment varnish is UV cured and tested before the batch leaves Al Quoz. There is no decal edge to catch a sponge and no wrap to shrink back, because nothing was applied over the glaze: the ink is bonded to it.

The honest advice for a procurement buyer is still to prove it on your own terms. Ask for a printed sample cup before the run is approved, put it into normal service in your office, wash it the way your pantry actually washes cups, and sign off on the result.
