# Can UV-Printed Bottles and Tumblers Go in the Dishwasher?

Yes, when the bottle or tumbler itself is made for the dishwasher. In our own wash tests, prints on glass bottles, drinking glasses, steel tumblers and bottles, and porcelain gahwa cups lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles, in home and commercial machines. Before printing, surfaces are pre-treated where they need it, with plasma and Pyrosil among the treatments, which gives the ink a strong bond. Keep the artwork clear of the rim and the base, and tell us whether your items go through a home dishwasher or a commercial machine.

This guide covers drinkware printed direct at Sun Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai: glass water bottles, reusable bottles, drinking glasses and steel tumblers. Porcelain gahwa cups have their own guide to [printed gahwa cups in hotel, cafe and majlis service](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/printed-qahwa-cups-dishwasher-scratch-resistance/). Perfume bottles meet alcohol rather than a dishwasher; see our guide to [alcohol-resistant perfume bottle printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/alcohol-resistant-perfume-bottle-printing-dubai/). If you are choosing drinkware to order, including which shapes and tapers print well, start with [custom water bottle, tumbler and flask printing in Dubai](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/custom-water-bottles-tumblers-flasks-dubai/).

## Is UV printing dishwasher safe? Four things decide it

For any one item, the answer comes from four things:

- **What the ink is bonded to.** On a glass bottle it is the glass, or whatever film sits on the glass. On a coated tumbler it is the coating, not the steel underneath.
- **How the surface was prepared.** Cleaning, and an adhesion promoter or pre-treatment where the surface needs one. Most of the bond is decided here.
- **How the print is built and where it sits.** A white base, the colour, a clear varnish or raised detail, and how close the artwork comes to the rim, the base and the places that rub.
- **How it will be washed.** By hand, in a home dishwasher or in a commercial glasswasher, on which programme, with which detergent, and how often.

## Our wash tests: more than 60 dishwasher cycles

We ran our own wash tests on printed glass bottles, drinking glasses, steel tumblers and bottles, and porcelain gahwa cups. On all four kinds of item, the prints lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles. The tests ran in home dishwashers and in commercial dishwashers.

For your order, that means drinkware can be planned for repeated machine washing. The item itself must be made for the dishwasher, and the artwork must sit clear of the rim and the base.

## Glass bottles and drinking glasses

Glass is hard and does not flex, and freshly cleaned glass has a high surface energy, so ink spreads across it rather than beading up. Spreading is not the same as bonding, though. Ink makers say printing on glass typically needs an adhesion promoter, even when the glass is clean. Glass also picks up films easily.

Glass bottles often leave the bottle plant with a cold-end coating: a very thin lubricating film, commonly a polyethylene wax or a stearate, that stops bottles scratching each other on the filling line. It cannot be seen, and many inks grip it poorly unless it is removed or treated. Handling oils, dust and packing residue add to it. Two bottles that look identical can therefore behave differently under the same ink, especially when they come from different plants or batches.

So glass is cleaned, and pre-treated where it needs it, before the ink goes down. In the glass decorating industry, coated bottles are prepared with flame, corona or plasma, with a very thin silica layer laid down by flame (the Pyrosil process), or with a primer. Our pre-treatment runs on Modico equipment supplied by [PRO TECHnology](https://www.protechnology.ae/modico-surface-pre-treatment-middle-east), which belongs to the same Dubai group as Sun Studio. Plasma and Pyrosil are among the treatments, the treatment is chosen for each item, and it gives the ink a strong bond. How flame, plasma and primers each work is explained in [why UV print peels: ink adhesion and pre-treatment](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-ink-adhesion-and-pre-treatment-dubai/).

Drinking glasses from a tableware supplier are a different product from bottles, so they are assessed on their own terms. Send the actual glass you will order, not one that looks the same.

## Reusable glass water bottles

A branded bottle that goes out once and is recycled, and a bottle that a guest or an employee refills every day for a year, are different specifications even when they are the same bottle. Say which one you are buying when you ask for a quote, not after the run.

Reusable bottles bring a few details of their own:

- The cap, the seal and any strap or sleeve are separate parts with their own washing instructions. We print the glass, so check how the maker says the lid should be washed.
- A bottle that lives in a fridge or an ice bucket carries condensation and moves between cold and room temperature every day. Mention it in the brief.
- A bottle scrubbed with a brush inside and a cloth outside meets more rubbing on the printed band than one rinsed and left to dry.
- Glass water bottles in hotels and restaurants are often washed by machine. If yours will be, tell us whether that is a home-type dishwasher or a commercial one.

## Water bottles for hotels, restaurants and offices

Glass bottles filled on site for guest rooms, restaurant tables and meeting rooms have a harder life than most printed bottles. They are washed and refilled far more often than a gift bottle, often by machine, and handled by staff at speed. Plan them for that duty from the start.

- Keep the print below the neck and above the base. On a shaped bottle the shoulder and the heel are usually the widest points and take the knocks; on a straight-sided bottle the whole body touches its neighbours, so space bottles apart in the rack.
- Tell us how the bottles are washed: in the venue's dishwasher or glasswasher, and how often.
- Order a few printed spares with the first run to cover breakage, so a gap on a shelf can be filled at once.
- Keep one unused printed bottle as the reference, and keep the bottle model and supplier on record. A reorder on the same bottle is printed from the same file and checked against that reference; a new bottle model means a new sample.

## Steel tumblers and flasks: hand-wash labels and what the print sits on

On a powder-coated, painted or soft-touch tumbler, the ink does not touch the steel. It bonds to the coating, so the print can only last as long as the coating does, and how well that coating holds to the steel was decided at the tumbler factory.

That makes the maker's care label the first thing to check. Many insulated tumblers and flasks are sold as hand-wash only, and the maker sets that label for the tumbler as a whole, its finish, lid and seals included. If the tumbler or flask is sold as hand-wash only, printing it does not change that. If the maker rates it for the dishwasher, the print can be planned for machine washing too. Steel tumblers were part of our wash tests, and their prints lasted more than 60 cycles. The sample is printed on the exact finish you will order.

- **Powder-coated or painted steel**: the print bonds to the coating. A hard, fully cured coat often takes ink well with the right adhesion promoter. Send the coated tumbler you will actually order, in the same colour.
- **Soft-touch or rubberised finishes**: the most variable. Some are a soft layer that moves under the print, so we want a sample before we quote.
- **Bare or brushed stainless**: the ink bonds to the metal, which needs thorough degreasing and usually an adhesion promoter. On brushed steel the grain shows through the colour unless a white base is printed first.
- **Plastic tumblers and lids**: it depends on the plastic. Polypropylene and polyethylene reject ink until they are treated, as explained in [printing on PP, PE and PET](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-printing-on-plastic-dubai-pp-pe-pet/).
- **Glass tumblers**: see drinking glasses above. They are assessed as glass, on the actual glass you will order.

Ceramic mugs follow the same logic as gahwa cups: the ink bonds to the glaze, and the mug's own glaze and any gold rim have washing limits of their own.

## Home dishwasher or commercial glasswasher

Tell us which. Our wash tests ran in home dishwashers and in commercial dishwashers. A commercial machine is the harder duty.

A home dishwasher usually runs one load at a time on a programme chosen for that load. A commercial undercounter glasswasher or dishwasher in a hotel, cafe or restaurant runs short cycles through the day, with hot wash water, a hot final rinse and detergent dosed automatically. Winterhalter's manual for its UC undercounter machines, for example, gives a wash at about 62 °C and a final rinse at 85 °C, and a service technician can change those settings. Winterhalter lists 47 to 163 seconds for the glasswasher programmes of its UC-M model. In a busy venue the same glass may go through the machine several times a day.

When a job is planned for commercial washing, we want to know the machine type, how often items go through it, the detergent if the venue knows it, and whether glasses are racked apart or packed tight.

## What a dishwasher does to a printed surface

A wash combines detergent, heat, water pressure and contact, and each one works on the print in a different way.

- **Detergent**: dishwasher detergents are usually alkaline. Hot alkaline detergent can act on the ink film and on the bond beneath it.
- **Heat, then cooling**: every cycle heats the item and lets it cool again. Glass, steel and cured ink do not expand by exactly the same amount, so repeated cycles can work on the bond between them.
- **Spray**: water under pressure reaches every edge of the artwork, cycle after cycle.
- **Contact**: items knocking against the rack and against each other. Winterhalter's manual tells operators to space glasses so they do not rub, to avoid scratches.
- **What happens outside the machine**: scouring pads, drying cloths with grit in them, and stacking items while they are still wet.

On a direct print, wear often shows first at an edge or a high point: the outline of the artwork, the area near the rim or the base, a raised detail, or the place where the item touches the rack.

## Where to place the artwork on a bottle or tumbler

Placement is a durability decision as much as a design one.

- Keep the print below the drinking rim and off the inside. The rim takes lips, cloths and the rack, and graphic printing belongs on the outside, clear of the area the mouth touches.
- Keep clear of the base and the heel, which rub on the rack, on trays and on the item below in a stack.
- On a tumbler, think about where the hand grips, and where a lid, a handle or a sleeve touches the body.
- Large solid areas and large white fields make any scuff easy to see. Open designs and linework hide small marks better.

## White ink, varnish and raised details on drinkware

**White ink** is there for how the design looks. On clear glass and on dark or brushed steel, a white layer under the colour stops the background showing through. It does not strengthen the bond, and it is one more layer that has to cure and hold. It also appears in the price.

**A clear varnish** printed over the colour is a sacrificial layer: it takes rubbing before the colour does. That helps against cloths, racks and stacking. It will not stop grit or a scouring pad. And it cannot fix an unprepared surface, because it sits on top of the print, not under it.

**Raised details** are built from layers of ink, so they stand proud of the surface, and on a washed item that is where contact lands first. Put them away from the rim, the grip and the base. We built raised artwork on [fifty glass bottles for a private party](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/printed-glass-bottles-birthday-dubai/), and [how raised UV printing builds its layers](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/raised-3d-embossed-uv-printing-tactile-braille-dubai/) is explained separately.

## UV DTF wraps or direct printing for washed drinkware

UV DTF is a printed film carried on an adhesive and pressed onto the item. In a wash, the adhesive and the edge of the film are what the heat, the detergent and the spray work on. A direct print is ink cured onto the surface itself, with no film and no adhesive, so that route to failure is not there. It still has edges, and they hold only as well as the ink is bonded to the item.

Sun Studio prints direct only. UV DTF still suits some flat, low-wear, hand-washed items, and [why UV DTF peels, and when to print direct instead](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/why-uv-dtf-peels-and-when-to-print-direct/) sets out where each one makes sense.

## How to wash printed bottles and tumblers

In our own wash tests, prints lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles, so printed drinkware can go in the dishwasher when the item itself is made for it. Most of the care below protects the bottle and its lid as much as the print.

- Follow the maker's care label for the bottle or tumbler, and for the lid, seal and strap, which often have rules of their own. Take them off and wash them as the maker says.
- Wash the printed outside with a soft sponge and the inside with a bottle brush, and keep the brush, scourers and abrasive creams off the print.
- In a home dishwasher, stand bottles and glasses in the top rack with space around each one, so the printed band does not rub the next item.
- Keep printed items out of long bleach or sanitiser soaks, and away from sterilising tablets.
- Dry bottles upside down with the cap off, and let them dry fully before they are capped, stacked or boxed.

Porcelain cups have their own routine in [how to wash and care for printed gahwa cups](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/printed-qahwa-cups-dishwasher-scratch-resistance/#how-to-wash-and-care-for-printed-qahwa-cups).

## How a sample is checked before a run

We print a sample on your actual item, from the same batch as the order where possible. It gets the pre-treatment, the ink build and the placement planned for production, and the bond is checked before the sample goes to you. We quote the sample separately from the run.

The approved sample becomes the reference for the run: production is printed from the same file, with the same preparation, and checked against it. If a sample shows a problem, we change the preparation, the build or the placement and print it again.

How a bond is checked with a cross-hatch tape test is explained in our [guide to ink adhesion and pre-treatment](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-ink-adhesion-and-pre-treatment-dubai/).

For a large order, you can also put a few printed samples through your own machine before you approve the run.

## What to send for a quote

Send these on [WhatsApp](https://wa.me/97143467422?text=Hi%20Sun%20Studio%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20print%20drinkware%20that%20will%20be%20washed.%0AItem%20%28bottle%20/%20glass%20/%20tumbler%29%20and%20photos%3A%20%28attached%29%0AMaterial%20or%20coating%3A%20%0AQuantity%3A%20%0AHow%20it%20will%20be%20washed%20%28hand%20/%20home%20dishwasher%20/%20commercial%29%3A%20%0AArtwork%3A%20%28attached%29%0ADeadline%3A%20) and we can reply with a price, not a range:

- The actual item, or its exact product code and supplier. For a coated tumbler, one in the same colour and from the same batch as the order.
- Photos from the front and the side, and the dimensions.
- The quantity, and whether the order will repeat.
- Vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) with the fonts outlined, or a high-resolution file at print size, and any brand colour references.
- How the item will be washed: by hand, in a home dishwasher or in a commercial machine, and roughly how often.
- Where the artwork should sit, and what must stay clear: the rim, the grip, a handle or the lid.
- Your deadline, and where in the UAE the order is going.

Items can be dropped at the studio in Al Quoz or couriered to us. There is no minimum order quantity for UV printing done in our studio: one item as a sample, a short run or a production run. The price per piece falls as the quantity rises. Round items are printed on our [cylindrical and 360° printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/cylindrical-printing-dubai/) line.

## Common questions

### Are UV-printed glass bottles dishwasher safe?

Printed glass bottles lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles in our own wash tests, in home and commercial machines, so they can be made for repeated machine washing. Bottles are cleaned and, where the surface needs it, pre-treated before printing, with plasma and Pyrosil among the treatments, which gives the ink a strong bond. How long your bottle lasts also depends on any coating on it, where the print sits and how hard it is washed.

### Are UV-printed tumblers dishwasher safe?

Start with the tumbler maker's care label: if the tumbler is sold as hand-wash only, the printed tumbler is too. If the maker rates it for the dishwasher, the print can be planned for machine washing. Steel tumblers were among the items in our wash tests, and their prints lasted more than 60 cycles. On a coated tumbler the print bonds to the coating, so it can only last as long as the coating does.

### Are UV-printed mugs dishwasher safe?

A ceramic mug is printed on its glaze, so the print depends on its bond to that glaze, and the mug's own glaze and any gold rim have washing limits set by the maker. Porcelain gahwa cups, also printed on the glaze, lasted more than 60 cycles in our wash tests. A handled mug is checked on the press before we quote.

### Can printed glassware go through a commercial glasswasher?

Yes, it can be planned for one. In our wash tests, prints lasted more than 60 cycles in commercial dishwashers as well as home ones. A commercial glasswasher is the harder duty, with short, hot cycles through the day, detergent dosed automatically and rack contact on every load. Tell us the machine type, how often items are washed and how they are racked.

### What makes a printed bottle wear or peel in the dishwasher?

Common causes are a surface that was contaminated or coated when it was printed, a missing or unsuitable pre-treatment, or ink that had not fully cured. A coating that came away from the glass or metal, or a washing duty harder than the print was planned for, will also do it. Rack contact and scouring pads add wear at edges and high points. Preparation prevents most of it, which is why we pre-treat where the surface needs it before printing, with plasma and Pyrosil among the treatments.

### Is UV DTF dishwasher safe?

A UV DTF wrap is a printed film held on by an adhesive. In a dishwasher the heat, detergent and spray work on that adhesive and the film edge, so it is not the route we would choose for machine-washed drinkware. A direct print has no adhesive layer under its edges, so it is the stronger starting point, provided the ink is well bonded to the item. Sun Studio prints direct only.

### Does UV printing scratch off tumblers?

Keys, grit and scouring pads can mark any print. A clear varnish takes everyday rubbing first, and keeping the design away from the grip, the base and the lid helps. On a coated tumbler the print can only hold as well as the coating under it, so check the coating as well as the print.

### How should printed water bottles and tumblers be washed?

Follow the maker's care label for the bottle and the lid. Wash the printed outside with a soft sponge, use a bottle brush inside, and keep scourers and abrasive creams off the print. In a home dishwasher, use the top rack and space items so they do not touch. Keep printed items out of long bleach soaks and away from sterilising tablets.

### How many dishwasher cycles will a printed bottle survive?

In our own wash tests, prints on glass bottles, drinking glasses, steel tumblers and bottles, and porcelain gahwa cups lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles, in home and commercial machines. How many your bottle reaches depends on its surface, where the print sits, and how often it is washed.

Send a photo of the bottle or tumbler, its product code, the quantity, your artwork and how it will be washed on WhatsApp at **+971 4 346 7422**, or email info@sunstudio.ae. We will reply with a price and print a sample on your item before the run.
