# Outdoor Aluminium and ACP Printing in the UAE: What to Specify Before You Order

Outdoor aluminium and ACP printing works when the panel's finish, the site and the cleaning are known before printing, and a sample has been tested against them. On ACP and coated aluminium the ink bonds to the paint, not the metal. On bare and anodised sheet it bonds to a surface we prepare. UAE sun and heat fade colour and work on that bond over time, so we test a sample and do not quote a lifespan in years.

## Start with the panel finish

"Aluminium" can mean five different print surfaces, and the finish decides how the print bonds. An aluminium composite panel is two thin aluminium skins over a core with a factory-applied paint on the face, as [3A Composites](https://www.alucobond.com/en/products/by-brand/alucobond-plus/), for example, describes its panels. So on ACP we print that paint, never bare metal.

## Where will the panels live?

The site changes the build, so tell us about it before we quote:

- **Which way it faces,** and whether it takes direct sun for most of the day or sits in shade.
- **Near the sea or inland.** Coastal sites add salt and humidity.
- **Fully outside or sheltered:** a car park, a covered walkway or an atrium under a skylight each behave differently from an open facade.
- **How long it needs to last:** hoarding for a few months is a different brief from permanent cladding.
- **Height and access:** panels nobody can reach are hard to clean and to replace.

Those answers decide whether white goes under the colour, whether a clear coat is worth adding, and which colours to favour, because some pigments fade faster than others.

## Handling, from your workshop to our press and back

- **Keep the protective film on** until the panels reach us. We remove it at the press. Panels stored uncovered collect dust and scuffs that show through the print.
- **Fabricate first.** Rout, cut and fold before printing. Folding a printed panel strains the ink at the fold, which is where it cracks. If routing after printing cannot be avoided, tell us so the artwork allows for the cut line.
- **Stack flat** with interleaving, and do not lean panels against a wall, where they can bow.
- **Number the panels** in installation order when one artwork runs across several, as on our [gradient and raised ACP panels](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/gradient-embossed-printing-acp-panels-uae/).
- **Install with gloves,** and keep fixings, sealant and drilling swarf off the printed face.

We print panels; we do not fabricate them or install cladding. We can source ACP for a job we are printing, quoted as its own line.

## Cleaning: how will the panels be washed?

Facade and sign cleaning is usually done by a contractor with their own chemicals and equipment, and that matters as much as the sun. Panel makers publish their own advice: the cleaning guide for [ALPOLIC panels with a Lumiflon finish](https://www.networkarchitectural.com.au/wp/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cleaning-Procedures-of-ALPOLIC-Coated-with-Lumiflon-LH-rev.pdf) recommends a mild detergent or a weak isopropyl alcohol solution, and testing anything stronger on a hidden spot first.

A cleaner the panel coating tolerates may still attack printed ink. So tell us what the cleaning contractor uses, and we test it on a printed offcut. As a general rule, a soft cloth or sponge with a mild detergent, no abrasive pads, and no solvents unless they have been tested on the print.

## Sun, heat and what fades

Strong sun fades printed colour over time, and how fast depends mainly on the pigments in the ink, as [Fujifilm explains](https://asset.fujifilm.com/www/al/files/2020-12/c15871003665b56500338240604a9d99/EU3262_UVivid_JD_Light_Fastness.pdf) for its own inks. Heat adds daily expansion and contraction of the panel, which works on the bond, and dark colours run hotter than light ones in the same sun.

A clear coat over the print can slow wear and fading, but it has to suit the ink and the cleaning, and it weathers too. [Mimaki](https://mimaki.com/support/faq/ink/entry-58452.html), a maker of UV printers, says hard UV inks have little weather resistance on their own and that any overcoat has to be tested. We decide on a clear coat per job and test it on the sample.

Accelerated weathering tests compare materials, but [Q-Lab](https://www.q-lab.com/education/how-many-hours-q-sun-or-quv-equals-year-outdoor-exposure), which makes the test chambers, says there is no fixed conversion from test hours to years outdoors. That is why we do not quote a lifespan, and why [how long UV printing lasts](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/how-long-does-uv-printing-last/) depends on more than the ink.

## The sample test before a large order

- **Send an offcut or a spare panel** from the same batch as the run.
- **We print the real build:** white base, colour and any clear coat, with the settings recorded.
- **We test adhesion** with a cross-cut tape test, as in [ISO 2409](https://www.evs.ee/en/evs-en-iso-2409-2020), after the print has rested.
- **We test your cleaning method** on the printed sample.
- **Keep a retained sample on site,** facing the same way as the panels, and an identical one indoors to compare against.

A sample is charged at AED 105 or AED 150, depending on what it is, and the fee comes off the invoice if you go ahead. It is usually ready in one to three working days once the artwork is approved. For a large or unusual piece, we confirm the fee and the time first.

## What we print, and what stays with you

We print the panel face in our studio in Al Quoz: full ACP sheets on the IQDEMY EVO 2500, a belt flatbed 2.5 metres wide with no machine limit on length, and smaller panels, plates and badges on our Direct Color Systems UV84 (a 4 x 8 ft bed) and UV44 (130 x 130 cm). ## Common questions

### How long will a printed ACP sign last outdoors in Dubai?

We do not quote a lifespan in years. It depends on the panel coating, the ink, any clear coat, which way it faces and how it is cleaned. We test a sample, and we suggest keeping a retained sample on site to watch against an indoor twin.

### Do you clear coat outdoor panels?

When the site calls for it. A clear coat can slow wear and fading, but it has to suit the ink and the cleaning method, so we test it on the sample first.

### Can you print on powder-coated aluminium?

Yes. The ink bonds to the powder coat, so the coat's quality and cure decide the result. We test a panel from the batch before the run.

### Can a printed ACP panel be bent or routed afterwards?

It is better not to. Rout, cut and fold first, then print, because folding a printed panel cracks the ink at the fold.

### Do you install the panels?

No. We print the panel face. Fabrication and installation stay with you or your contractor. We can source ACP for a job we are printing.

### Is direct printing better than vinyl on outdoor ACP?

They fail differently. Direct print has no film edge to lift and no seams, while vinyl can be stripped and replaced without a new panel. Our ACP printing page compares the two.
