# Printed Qahwa Cups in Hotel, Cafe and Majlis Service: Dishwasher and Scratch Resistance

Printed qahwa cups can be specified for daily dishwashing and stacking. That needs the artwork printed direct onto the glaze after pre-treatment and kept clear of the rim, with a UV-cured varnish, where specified, to take the cup-on-cup rubbing. Scouring pads and grit can still scratch the print. What nobody can honestly promise is that a printed cup is dishwasher safe before sample cups have been through your own machine, with your own detergent, for a fortnight.

A qahwa cup is the small handleless cup Arabic coffee is served in, sold as a qahwa, gahwa, finjan or fenjan cup depending on the seller. This guide covers printed porcelain cups that go into service rather than into a gift box: in hotels, cafes and restaurants, office pantries and the majlis, they are poured, washed and stacked after every round. ## Can printed qahwa cups go through a dishwasher every day?

Yes, when the cup, the print and the washing routine have been specified for it and sample cups have passed in your own conditions. “Dishwasher safe” is a claim about a finished product in a particular machine, not a property of a printing method, which is why we do not promise it for a printed cup. Three things decide the answer for a qahwa cup.

- **The bond**: a qahwa cup, or finjan, is porcelain under a fired glaze, and a glaze is glass chemistry, so the ink bonds to glass rather than to the porcelain body underneath. The cup is cleaned, degreased and primed on a Modico ModiTreat pre-treatment unit, printed on our LSINC cylindrical presses, which can wrap the artwork all the way round, and finished with a UV-cured varnish where specified. Nothing is laminated on top, so there is no film edge for the wash to lift.
- **The cup**: its own glaze, and any gold or silver rim the maker fired onto it, has washing limits of its own, and those apply to the whole set whatever the print does. Read the maker's care label before you choose the cup, not after the run.
- **The service**: a hand-washed pantry set and a cup that goes through a hotel dishwasher after every round of coffee are different briefs. Tell us which one you are buying for, and we will treat the second as the harder job it is.

Each cup shape is checked for diameter and flare before a run, because a flared wall moves away from the print head as the cup turns, and that decides where the printable band falls.

## What a commercial dishwasher in a hotel or cafe does to a qahwa cup

A hotel or cafe dishwasher is harder on a printed qahwa cup than a home machine, because it repeats a short, hot, strongly alkaline wash all day. Undercounter glasswashers, hood or pass-through dishwashers and rack conveyors all work this way, with high-pressure jets and a cycle of a minute or two.

Two more stresses sit on top of the chemistry for a qahwa cup. The cups knock against the rack on every load, and against each other when they are packed in tight, and they heat and cool all day: hot qahwa is poured in several times, then the cup is washed, dried and stacked again. So a busy lobby or majlis, where the same cups go round all day, is a harder test than an office that serves coffee twice a day.

Laboratory tests exist, and they are worth understanding before you rely on one. The European reference method for dishwasher resistance, EN 12875-1, is written for domestic dishwashing, keeps the test pieces apart so they never touch, and does not set a number of cycles a product has to survive. A lab result is useful evidence, but it does not reproduce cups rubbing together in a rack or a stack, which real service adds on top of the detergent and the heat.

## Why printed qahwa cups scratch, and where wear starts

Much of the visible wear on a printed cup comes from contact rather than chemistry. Qahwa cups are held in a stack in the server's hand, nested in cupboards, set down on trays and packed into dishwasher racks, and each of those moments rubs the rim or foot of one cup against the printed band of the next.

Where a UV-cured varnish is specified, it is there to take that cup-on-cup rubbing before the colour does. What it will not stop is a hard edge meeting the printed band: a scouring pad, grit caught in a drying cloth, or a knife loose in the same rack. Where the artwork sits decides where that wear shows.

- Keep the artwork below the rim. The rim takes lips, cloths and the rack, and an ink edge there is the first place wear starts
- Keep it clear of the foot, which rubs on trays and on the cup below it in a stack
- Keep the inside of the cup clear: we print nothing on the inside surface
- For cups that go through a machine daily, prefer open designs and linework. A heavy flood of ink around the whole body has more stress across it as the cup heats and cools

## UV print, fired decal or transfer on a qahwa cup: which suits heavy commercial washing?

For very heavy commercial washing at volume, fired decoration usually outlasts a direct UV print, while a transfer film tends to lift at its adhesive edge. Direct UV printing is the practical choice for smaller runs, cups you supply and matching top-ups. Here is how the three compare on a porcelain cup.

- **Fired decoration**: a ceramic decal or an on-glaze print fired in a kiln, so the decoration fuses into the glaze. For very heavy commercial washing at volume it is usually the more durable route, and we say so. It needs decals made for the job and a kiln firing, so it is normally ordered through the cup maker or a ceramic decorator, in larger quantities and on a longer lead time
- **Direct UV print**: what Sun Studio does. The ink is printed onto the finished glaze and cured by UV light, with no kiln. It works on cups you supply, from one sample cup upwards, with no minimum order, and matching replacements can be printed later
- **Transfer film**: UV DTF and similar films carry the print on an adhesive layer that is applied to the cup. The adhesive edge is where it fails in a wash. In practice: if a hotel group needs thousands of identical cups for a commercial machine and can wait for a kiln-fired run, ask the cup maker or a ceramic decorator about fired decoration. If you need a few dozen or a few hundred cups, several designs, a pilot in one outlet, or cups that match a set you already have, direct printing is the practical route, and a sample test tells you whether it suits your machine.

## How to wash and care for printed qahwa cups

Wash printed qahwa cups gently, rack them so they do not touch, and keep abrasives and bleach soaks off the print. Most of this is the ordinary care good porcelain gets anyway.

- Wash by hand with a soft sponge and a mild detergent where you can. It is the gentlest routine, and the one gift sets are designed around
- In a machine, rack the cups so they do not touch each other, and use the top rack of a domestic dishwasher
- Keep scouring pads, steel wool and abrasive creams off the printed band. They act on the print, not on the glaze beneath it
- Avoid long soaks in bleach, chlorine sanitiser or de-staining powder to lift coffee and saffron stains, unless a sample cup has been through the same soak
- Let cups dry fully before they are nested in a stack
- Follow the cup maker's care label for gold or silver rims, including anything it says about the microwave. The rim is the maker's decoration, not our print

## How to test a sample cup before you approve a run

Test printed qahwa cups before a hotel or cafe order by putting printed samples through a fortnight of your normal service and comparing them with one unwashed sample. A useful trial is simple.

- Ask for at least three printed sample cups, on the exact cup you will use
- Keep one unwashed, in a cupboard, as the reference
- Put the others into normal service for a fortnight: your machine, your detergent, your racking and your staff
- Compare them with the reference in daylight: colour, gloss, the edges of the artwork and the band near the rim

Keep one sample cup unwashed as the reference, and put the rest through your own machine for a fortnight.

Approve the run once the washed cups still look like the reference. A fortnight of real service tells you more than any promise a printer could make.

## Matching replacement cups when a set breaks

Cups break in service, so the practical question is whether cup number 130, ordered months after the first hundred, matches the ones on the tray. The print file does not change. The blank cup can: makers revise models, and glaze colour and shape can vary between production lots, which changes how the same artwork sits and reads.

Pin three things down at the start. Keep the exact cup model and supplier on record, keep one approved cup out of service as the reference, and order a small buffer with the first run. Because there is no minimum order, a top-up of a dozen cups is a normal job. If the cup has been discontinued, tell us early: a new cup means a new sample, not a repeat.

## What to send us for a hotel, cafe or majlis cup order

One sample cup and a clean artwork file answer most of the questions. Send the following.

- The exact cup, with the maker, model and supplier if you know them
- Who is supplying the cups. Sun Studio prints; the cups normally come from you or your own supplier, and if you would rather we sourced them, ask and we will tell you whether we can
- How the cups are washed: by hand, in a domestic machine or in a commercial dishwasher, and how often
- Quantity now, and the replacements you expect across a year
- Vector artwork with fonts outlined, and your brand colour references
- Whether the cup is white, coloured or dark, which decides whether a **white base** is needed
- Any gold or silver rim, so the artwork can be placed clear of it
- Your deadline, and confirmation that you want sample cups approved before the run

## Common questions

### Are printed qahwa or gahwa cups dishwasher safe?

Not as a blanket promise, from any printer. On a printed Arabic coffee cup, a direct UV print bonded to the glaze, with a UV-cured varnish and the rim left clear, can be specified for repeated washing, but the result depends on the cup, the machine and the detergent. Put printed sample cups through your own dishwasher for a fortnight before you approve a run.

### Does pouring hot qahwa all day affect the print?

Heat on its own is rarely the problem. Repeated heating and cooling, combined with washing and stacking, is what wears a print over time. A heavy flood of ink around the whole cup carries more stress through those cycles than open linework does, so cups for busy daily service are better designed with lighter coverage and a clear rim.

### Which lasts longer on a porcelain cup, UV printing or a fired decal?

For very heavy commercial washing, a fired decal usually lasts longer, because the kiln fuses it into the glaze. A UV print is cured on top of the glaze, not fired into it. The trade-off is ordering: fired decoration is made in larger runs through the cup maker or a ceramic decorator, while direct UV printing works on cups you supply, with no minimum order.

### Will the gold rim on our qahwa cups survive the dishwasher?

That depends on the cup maker, not on our print. A gold or silver rim is the maker's own decoration, with its own washing limits, so check the care label before you choose the cup. We keep the artwork clear of the rim. If the rim is rated for hand-washing only, the whole set has to be washed by hand.

### Can we order a few replacement cups later that match our set?

Yes, if the blank cup is the same model from the same supplier. The print file stays the same, so the risk is the cup: a revised model or a new glaze lot can change how the artwork reads. Order a few extra printed cups up front, and send a new sample cup if the model has been discontinued.
