# Flat vs Cylindrical Perfume Bottles: Which Press, and What Changes

The shape of the bottle decides the press. Flat, square and rectangular perfume bottles are printed on a flatbed, one face at a time. Round bottles turn under the printhead on a cylindrical press, so the artwork can wrap the whole body. That choice changes the artwork file you send, the finishes you can ask for and the price. This guide sets out the differences for brand owners and designers preparing files.

Sun Studio prints bottles that brands across the UAE, or their bottle suppliers, send to our studio in Al Quoz, Dubai. We do not sell bottles and we do not make printed cartons. Minimum order, lead time and what to send for a quote are answered on the [perfume bottle printing in Dubai](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/perfume-bottle-printing-dubai/) service page. This article stays with shape, press and artwork set-up.

Flat bottles run on our Direct Color Systems flatbeds. Round bottles run on the LSINC PeriQ360 or the LSINC PeriOne. Sun Studio belongs to the same Dubai group as PRO TECHnology, which distributes LSINC and Direct Color Systems equipment in the Middle East, so read our view of the machines with that in mind. For objects other than bottles, see [flatbed, cylindrical or wall printer: which one your job needs](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-printing-dubai-flatbed-cylindrical-wall/).

## Flat or round at a glance

Seven things change with the shape of the bottle:

- **Press**: a flat bottle lies on a Direct Color Systems flatbed. A round bottle turns on an LSINC cylindrical press.
- **Printable area**: on a flat bottle, the flat face, one face per pass. On a round bottle, the straight part of the body, all the way round.
- **Artwork file**: for a flat bottle, one file for each printed face. For a round bottle, one flat strip as wide as the circumference of the printed band.
- **White ink**: on a flat bottle it is placed face by face, under the colours that must read opaque. On a round bottle, tell us which areas must be opaque and the build is confirmed on the sample.
- **Raised effects**: built up in layers on flat faces. On a round bottle, ask before you design one.
- **Sides**: a flat bottle is printed front and back, and a third face is confirmed on a sample or declined. A round bottle has no sides, because the wrap covers the body.
- **Sampling**: one printed sample for each shape. A range with flat and round bottles is two set-ups and two samples.

## What changes on a flat bottle

On the flatbed the bottle lies still in a jig while the printhead passes over one face. Registration is exact, and raised or layered effects can be built up pass by pass. Front and back are two separate passes, registered to each other, and the printable area is the flat face. The [thousand mini bottles printed for a corporate gifting run](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/uv-printed-mini-perfume-bottles-corporate-gifting/) show the method: flat 50 ml bottles held in a tray jig, with four artworks in one run.

On clear or frosted glass, white ink does the structural work. CMYK inks are translucent, so a white base is printed first wherever the colours must read opaque. It is left out wherever the design should stay see-through, which is how a bottle keeps its transparency as part of the composition. The [Egyptian World Cup edition](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/egyptian-world-cup-perfume-bottle-printing/) is the example: 1,250 flat square bottles printed on both faces, with the fragrance and its fill level kept as part of the image.

Where the glass curves away towards a shoulder or an edge, the distance to the printhead changes and detail softens. Artwork with a small margin is safer than artwork that runs hard to the edge. Shoulders, edges and curved corners are not printed.

## What changes on a cylindrical bottle

A round bottle goes on a press that turns it under a fixed printhead, so the artwork runs the full circumference and the print has no visible join. Straight-sided bottles are the easiest case. A tapered body, a flared neck or an oval rather than round cross-section changes what can be printed, because the surface has to keep a constant distance from the head as it turns. The same press prints aluminium body spray cans.

Round bottles of every kind, not only perfume, are covered by our [cylindrical and 360° printing service](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/cylindrical-printing-dubai/). For decoration methods and finishes rather than shape, read the [perfume bottle decoration guide](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/why-the-gcc-fragrance-industry-is-moving-beyond-labels/).

## Setting up the artwork

The two presses need different files. Settle the shape first, then build the artwork for it.

For a flat bottle printed front and back:

- One file for each printed face, at the real size of the flat face.
- A small margin all round, clear of the line where the face starts to curve.
- Logos, type and Arabic calligraphy as vector, with the type outlined. Photographic artwork at high resolution.
- Areas that should stay clear glass left transparent in the file, with a note of which elements need white printed behind them.
- Any raised element on its own named layer, with a note saying whether it is a clear relief over the colour or an opaque white one.

*A photographic face and a solid colour face with a wordmark. Each printed face of a flat bottle is its own file*

For a wrap on a round bottle:

- One flat strip, as wide as the true circumference of the printed band and as tall as the straight part of the body.
- The two ends of the strip should meet at the back of the bottle, so the front of the design is never split. The print itself has no visible join.
- Nothing on the shoulder or the neck flare. Tapers and flares limit the band that can be printed.
- The same rules for vector, resolution and white as on a flat bottle.

[How 360° bottle printing works](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/cylindrical-printing-dubai-bottles-cans-tumblers/) covers wrap artwork and the shapes that do and do not rotate cleanly in more detail.

## Oval, shouldered and in-between bottles

Many perfume bottles are neither a true flat nor a true cylinder. The rule behind every decision is the same: the printhead needs a constant distance to the glass. A flat face gives that on the flatbed. A round, straight-sided body gives it on the cylindrical press. Where a surface offers neither, the printable band has to be defined on the bottle rather than assumed.

Rounded shoulders do not change the press. A bottle with flat faces and soft shoulders is still flatbed work: the artwork stays on the flat face and stops short of the curve. An oval section, or a flat front with rounded sides, is different. It is decided on the physical bottle rather than from a drawing, so send the bottle itself when the shape is in doubt.

Sides follow the same logic. Front and back are the standard layout on a flat bottle. A third face is a candidate only when it is a true flat plane wide enough for its own pass, and it is confirmed on a printed sample or declined. If the design has to continue all the way round, that is a wrap on a cylindrical bottle: a different press and usually a different bottle.

## Which finishes depend on the shape

Full colour, photographic artwork, gradients and fine Arabic lettering print on both shapes. Two finishes are flat-bottle work:

- **Raised and textured effects**: ink built up in layers so a logo can be felt as well as seen. They are produced on flat faces on the flatbed. On a round bottle, ask first: whether a raised element is possible depends on the geometry and the press, and the sample decides. See [how raised and 3D embossed UV printing is built](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/raised-3d-embossed-uv-printing-tactile-braille-dubai/).
- **Reverse printing**: for a deep, glossy result the artwork is printed on the back face and viewed through the glass. The artwork is mirrored and the layer order reverses, with white going down over the colour instead of under it, so the design reads correctly from the front.

A UV-cured varnish goes over the colour where the finish calls for it. Printed gold and silver are simulated in ink on either shape: it is not metallic ink and it is not foil.

## Sampling on either press

Because the process is digital, a single sample runs the same way a thousand bottles do. There are no plates and no screens, so there is no minimum order, and a brand can approve a printed bottle in hand before committing to the run. Why screen printing carries a minimum and digital printing does not is explained in [screen printing minimums and setup costs in the UAE](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/screen-printing-minimum-order-quantities-uae/).

*A run of square bottles, each printed across the front face from the artwork approved on the sample*

Alcohol and scratch resistance are tested on a sample printed on your own bottle rather than assumed, because coated and lacquered glass varies. [How alcohol resistance is checked on a printed bottle](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/alcohol-resistant-perfume-bottle-printing-dubai/) explains the tests.

If you are not sure which category a bottle falls into, send a photograph and the dimensions. It settles the method, the artwork layout and the price.

## Common questions

### My bottle is oval or has rounded shoulders: is it flat or cylindrical?

Look at the faces, not the shoulders. If the front and back are flat planes, it is flatbed work and the artwork simply stops before the curve. A body that is oval in cross-section is neither flat nor round. Send us the bottle: we define the printable band on the glass itself and confirm it with a printed sample.

### How do I set up artwork for a front-and-back bottle versus a wrap?

For a flat bottle, supply one file for each printed face at the real size of the face, with a small margin. For a wrap, supply one flat strip as wide as the circumference of the printed band, with the two ends meeting at the back of the bottle. In both cases mark which elements need white behind them.

### Can the narrow sides of a flat perfume bottle be printed?

Only when the side is a true flat plane, wide enough for a pass of its own. Even then we confirm it on a printed sample or decline it. Front and back remain the standard layout, and curved corners, edges and shoulders are left unprinted. A design that has to run right round the bottle belongs on a cylindrical bottle instead.

### Which finishes are only possible on a flat perfume bottle?

Reverse printing, where the artwork sits on the back face and is read through the glass, needs a flat bottle. Raised and textured effects are built on flat faces on the Direct Color Systems flatbed. On a round bottle printed on the LSINC PeriQ360 or PeriOne, ask before designing a raised element: the geometry and the press decide, and a sample settles it.

### Can one fragrance range include both flat and round bottles?

Yes. They run on two different presses, so a range with both is two set-ups and two samples, quoted as separate lines. Supply the same colour references for both and approve each sample on its own glass, because the glass and the liquid behind it change how a colour reads.
