The artwork is printed directly onto the glass, not applied as a film over it, usually on the second face, so the ink sits behind the glass where a cloth or a sanitiser cannot reach it. What follows is where it holds up in a working food-service interior, and where it does not. A tabletop in a busy cafe is wiped many times a day, and each wipe is a small abrasive event with a chemical in it. The list is short and hard: - **Chemicals**: alcohol sanitiser between covers, degreaser at close, bleach-based products near food preparation. - **Heat and steam**: plates and cups set down straight off the pass, steam drifting off an espresso machine. - **Spills that sit**: coffee, citrus, oil and tomato, left through a service. - **Close inspection**: a customer waiting at a counter reads the surface from 300 millimetres, not from across the room. Glass takes that list better than laminate, painted MDF or vinyl-wrapped board, which is why it keeps turning up in cafe fit-outs in the first place. The only real question is how the graphic gets onto it. ## In food service, a lifting edge is a hygiene problem Applied film has an edge, and in food service that edge is not only a cosmetic risk. Film is a printed sheet stuck to the glass, so there is a boundary where the sheet stops, and once it starts to lift that boundary collects water, grease and food debris. Heat and steam bring the lifting forward. Behind an espresso machine a laminate edge takes moisture in and the corner curls; on a tabletop the lift starts wherever a thumbnail catches it. In an office corridor that is a snag on a maintenance list. On a service counter it is a crevice in a surface that is meant to be continuous and non-porous. The ink cures under UV light essentially the instant it is laid down, and stays on the prepared glass as a thin hard layer: no edge, no join across a wide panel, nothing to trap. Adhesion there is decided mostly by how the panel is cleaned and prepared before it goes on the bed. ## Tabletops, counters and menu displays These are the surfaces where printing the second face earns its keep. The image is mirrored, and white is laid down over the colour so that it still reads as backing from the viewer's side. Where the back of a panel stays visible the decision goes the other way. Segafredo Zanetti, the Italian espresso company, used [printed glass for wall panels and tabletops](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/segafredo-zanetti-printed-glass-interiors/) across cafe locations, carrying the textures and heritage of Italy into finishes made for daily service. The same artwork family runs across the walls and the tables, and glass was chosen for the tables because it takes repeated cleaning well. A splashback printed on glass gives a continuous cleanable face behind the machine with no laminate edge for steam to get into. One thing to plan for: a printed menu panel is a panel, so changing the graphic means new glass. Print the identity and the frame, and leave anything that changes quarterly to something swappable. ## Shopfronts and feature glass: architecture rather than applied signage At shopfront and feature scale the distinction that matters is between decorating a wall and building the graphic into the architecture. The work is architectural: [large-format printed features on tempered glass](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/mcdonalds-printed-glass-dubai-mall/), not applied signage. The brand palette is printed on the glass itself, with no film over it, and the cleaning regime of a flagship food-service outlet, chemicals included, was part of the specification. Outdoors is a different specification. At [Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi](https://www.sunstudio.ae/portfolio/umm-al-emarat-park-printed-glass-abu-dhabi/), large-format printed glass carries informational displays, partitions and decorative cladding through a high-traffic public park, and the build was decided for that installation. As a rule, direct UV print is for interior and protected glass: a façade needs fired ceramic frit from the glass processor, and a shopfront in direct sun gets a test first and a stated, finite life. Toughened glass shatters if it is cut or drilled once it has left the furnace, so the panel is finished first (cut to size, edges polished, fixing holes drilled, then toughened) and printing is the last operation. Sun Studio prints; it does not make the glass. Panels come from your glazier or fit-out contractor, and they come to the studio to be printed flat on the bed. LED-UV curing is cold, so nothing in the process heats the panel or affects the toughening. The hard consequence is that a printed panel cannot be trimmed to fit: measure the openings and the table frames on site once the frames are up, not off the drawing. So the programme has to put printing between glass delivery and glass installation, not after handover. Panels also need to arrive clean and stay clean. One that has sat on site collecting silicone smears and adhesive residue has to be cleaned back before it can be printed at all. ## When film is the better answer Film is the better answer whenever the graphic is meant to change or come off, and that covers more of hospitality and retail than a printer usually admits: - **A tenant who rebrands every couple of years.** A printed panel is the panel; refreshing it means buying glass again. - **Leased glass handed back unmarked.** If reinstatement is in the lease, film comes off and a printed panel has to be replaced with a plain one. - **Glazing already installed.** Direct printing needs the panel flat on a bed. If the shopfront glass cannot come out, film applied on site is the only option. - **Seasonal graphics.** A campaign window or a limited-run menu does not justify new glass. The workable split is to print what is part of the interior and will outlive the campaign (tabletops, splashbacks, feature walls, the long-term identity on a shopfront) and film what changes. There is no minimum quantity: a single tabletop is a job, and so is a full floor. A cafe, restaurant or shop adds three things: - **The cleaning regime**: the products the site actually uses, including anything abrasive or bleach-based. - **How each panel installs**: which face is reachable once it is in, and what sits behind it. This is what decides first or second surface. - **What the lease says about reinstatement**: if the glass has to be handed back unmarked, that usually settles print or film faster than anything about the ink. The studio is in Al Quoz First, Dubai. ## Common questions ### Can you print a glass tabletop for a restaurant? Yes, and it is one of the applications glass suits best. The tabletop is printed on the underside, so the face that gets wiped, scraped and set down on is bare glass. The panel has to be cut, edge-polished and toughened before it is printed, so it needs to be ordered from your glazier at the right finished size. ### Does food touch the printed side of the glass? Not on a second-surface print. The ink is on the underside and the thickness of the glass sits between the print and anything on the table. If a panel has to be printed on the face for design reasons, tell us where it is going and what will be cleaned onto it, and we will specify accordingly. ### How do you clean printed glass in a cafe? The same way you clean the rest of the glass. On a second-surface print there is nothing on the visible face except glass, so a normal glass cleaner and a cloth are enough and the print is not part of the equation. Tell us before production if the site uses abrasive pads or strong bleach-based products, because on a first-surface print that changes what we specify. ### Will a printed shopfront panel fade in the Dubai sun? In direct sun, yes, over time. Direct UV print has a finite life in strong sunlight, and glass in front of the ink protects it from cleaning but does little against light. For a shopfront that takes full afternoon sun we print a test first and quote a stated life, or advise film instead. A shopfront inside a mall does not face this. ### Can a printed glass panel be cut down to fit on site? No. It is toughened before it is printed, and toughened glass shatters if it is cut or drilled. Measure the opening or the table frame after the frames are installed, then order the glass to that size. ### Is printed glass cheaper than frosted film? Not on day one. Film is priced by the square metre and applied on site; printed glass is a panel that has to be made, printed and installed. The comparison that matters is over the life of the fit-out: film in a food-service environment tends to get replaced and printed glass tends not to.
