# Wall Printing for Schools, Nurseries, Clinics and Gyms in the UAE

A nursery corridor is touched at knee height a few hundred times a day and wiped down every evening. A clinic wall is wiped to a written cleaning regime, more often than an office wall and with stronger products. A gym is humid, and bags and shoulders brush the walls all day. These are the rooms where a sheet stuck to a wall gives up first, and they are also the rooms that are hardest to close while it is replaced.

Most of what is sold as wall art in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah is wallpaper or self-adhesive vinyl: a printed sheet held on with adhesive. Direct to wall printing is a different product. The printer travels to the wall, and the ink is laid onto the wall surface and cured there: no carrier sheet, no adhesive, no seam.

Sun Studio belongs to the same Dubai group as PRO TECHnology, which distributes wallPen equipment in the Middle East, so read our view of the machine with that in mind.

## What direct to wall printing is, and what it is not

Sun Studio prints walls with a wallPen E2, a German machine that stands on the floor against the wall and travels along it, printing as it goes. The scope of the [direct wall printing service](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/wall-printing-dubai/) is set out separately. The ink is UV cured by photopolymerisation as it is laid, so it is dry the moment it is printed. What ends up on the wall is a thin film of cured ink, thin enough that the wall's own texture still reads through the image.

That is the whole difference. A sheet has a perimeter, and a perimeter is a free edge for humidity, a cleaning cloth or a fingernail to get under. Cured ink has no perimeter. We have set out [why sheets lift and printing does not](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/wall-printing-dubai-vs-wallpaper-and-vinyl/) separately. The trade-off belongs at the top rather than the bottom: you cannot peel it off. It is a finish, not a covering, and changing it means repainting the wall.

## School and nursery wall murals: touched at child height, cleaned every day

A nursery wall mural in the UAE lives in the worst metre of the room. Everything below waist height gets handled (hands, toys, trolley wheels, chair backs) and then wiped, usually with disinfectant rather than water, and more than once a day. Vinyl fails at a corner first, and in a nursery the corner has help: a lifted edge is something a small child will finish.

School wall printing in Dubai is the same problem at a larger scale, across corridors, libraries, sports halls and stairwells, with a handover date fixed by term dates rather than by the fit-out programme. One thing that comes up in the same conversation is not a mural at all: room numbering and wayfinding. Where a project requires tactile or braille signage, the heights and dimensions are set by the project's code and the authority approving it, and we have written about [wayfinding and braille signage requirements](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/braille-wayfinding-signage-dubai-requirements/) rather than repeat a figure here.

## Clinics: a lifting edge is a dirt trap

A clinic is not cleaned the way an office is. Surfaces are wiped with alcohol or chlorine-based products on a defined regime, and the finish has to take that. It also has to have nowhere for dirt to sit. The case against a sheet in a clinical room is geometric: a seam, a butt joint, a cut around a socket or a lifting corner is a gap between two materials, and a wipe passes over it rather than through it.

Printed clinic wall art in Abu Dhabi or Dubai does not create that gap, because there is no second material. Two qualifications, stated plainly. Cured ink is not a hygienic coating and we make no antimicrobial or medical claim for it. And cleaning products vary enough between facilities that an area should be tested before a full scheme goes on.

## Gyms: humid air, wiped surfaces, constant contact

Body Abs Gym, a brand with ten branches, fitted out a branch in Abu Dhabi and had seven walls printed across the training floor and studios. They were specific about what they did not want: no vinyl, no wallpaper, and no printed panels installed over the fit-out. The walls were printed on site with the wallPen E2.

A gym is a hard room for a wall finish. The air is humid, surfaces are wiped down constantly, and equipment, bags and shoulders brush the walls all day. Vinyl in that environment lifts and bubbles at its edges, and a scratch in a vinyl graphic means replacing the sheet. A scuff on a printed wall is touched up like any other paint damage.

Gym wall graphics in Dubai and Abu Dhabi also tend to come last, after the flooring and the equipment are in. Because the print goes on after painting and needs no fixings, the crews finishing that branch kept working around it. There was no installation day.

## Why the room does not have to be closed for long

UV ink cures under UV light essentially instantly, so there is no drying time, no adhesive setting overnight and no waiting period before the room is used again. What the job needs is access: the wall itself, a clear working strip in front of it, and power.

The room is out of use while the machine is on that wall, and not after.

That lands differently in each of these buildings. A school has a fixed window between terms. A clinic counts a closed room in lost appointments. A nursery cannot move children out for three days. A gym opening in Sharjah has a date advertised before the walls are decided. Printing removes the slow parts of a wall covering job: no roll handling, no pasting table, no wet trimming at skirting level.

The process behind all of this, from the state the wall has to be in to how sharp the print is, is in [how direct-to-wall printing works](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/direct-to-wall-mural-printing-dubai/). ## What to check before you specify it

Direct printing does not repair a wall. It records it. The surface decides the result more than the artwork does.

Sometimes the answer is not a printed wall. A leased clinic that has to be reinstated at the end of the term, or a splash zone behind a hand basin, may be better served by a printed acrylic panel or a covering that can be removed. Better said at quote stage than after.

- **Damp.** Active damp, salting or blown plaster is a building fault. Fix it first; printing over it hides it for a few months.
- **Fresh paint.** New paint has to be properly cured before anything is printed on it, and on a live fit-out that is usually what moves the date.
- **Texture.** Heavy roller stipple or textured render reads through the image. Some walls should be skimmed or lined rather than printed.
- **Dust and preparation.** Adhesion depends on the wall being sound, clean and dry. A sound painted wall needs no primer. Bare plaster or concrete is sealed first, and glass, glazed tile or coated metal takes an adhesion promoter, on the same principle as any other substrate: see [surface preparation and adhesion](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/uv-ink-adhesion-and-pre-treatment-dubai/).
- **Documentation.** For a nursery, a classroom or a clinical room, ask any supplier, including us, for the ink's safety data sheet and read it. Check the project's surface finish and fire requirements with the authority approving the project, not with a supplier's assurance.

## What to send for a quote

The machine travels, so direct to wall printing in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or the Northern Emirates runs the same way as a job in Dubai, with access and travel built into the schedule. There is no minimum order: a single nursery corridor is a job.

That is enough to price the work, and enough to tell you whether a wall needs making good first. [What a printed wall costs per square metre](https://www.sunstudio.ae/insights/wall-printing-price-dubai-cost-per-sqm/) is set out separately.

- Photographs of each wall, straight on, plus one wide shot of the room.
- Dimensions in metres, height and width, wall by wall.
- Substrate and existing paint system, and roughly how old the paint is.
- Artwork as vector where possible, or high resolution at final size. Say if an image has to run across a corner.
- How the room is cleaned, and with what.
- Address, access hours, whether the room is occupied or the site is still live, and the date the wall has to be finished.

## Common questions

### Can a printed wall be cleaned with disinfectant?

The image is cured ink in the wall's own surface, so it is cleaned the way the paint around it is cleaned, and there is no seam or lifting edge for a cloth to catch. Regimes and products vary between facilities, so tell us what the room is wiped with and test an area before a full scheme goes on.

### Is direct to wall printing suitable for a nursery or a clinical room?

The process is worth knowing precisely: **UV ink cures under UV light as it is laid**, so there is no adhesive, no solvent drying period and no waiting for a room to air out. That is a description of the process, not a certification. If the room is a nursery or a clinical space, ask any supplier for the ink's safety data sheet, and check the project's own requirements with the authority approving it.

### Can the artwork be removed later if the school or gym rebrands?

Not by peeling it off. It is a finish rather than a covering, so changing it means repainting the wall and printing again. If a scheme has to be reversible (a leased unit that must be reinstated, for instance), a removable covering or a printed panel is the honest answer.

### Can you print over existing wallpaper or a textured wall?

Wallpaper should come off and the wall be made good first, because printing onto a sheet inherits the sheet's failure. Texture is a judgement call: light texture reads through the image and often looks right, heavy render does not, and a heavily textured wall is usually skimmed or lined before printing.
