# Leather Printing in Dubai

Sun Studio does **full-colour UV printing directly onto leather and PU leather** at our Al Quoz studio in Dubai, for gifting companies, hotels, brands and leather goods makers across the UAE. We print notebook and diary covers, folders and menus, bag and accessory panels, upholstery pieces and desk items, onto the genuine leather or the PU itself.

Most of it is corporate: custom leather notebooks and folders, hotel and restaurant menu covers, gifting sets and personalised pieces where every cover carries a different name. Printing on leather here means ink on the surface. Embossing, debossing, foil stamping and laser marking are different processes, and we do not offer them.

## What we can print

Leather is a category that includes materials with almost nothing in common, so what you have matters:

- **Genuine leather**: with a finish or topcoat, which is what the ink actually meets.
- **PU leather and leatherette**: synthetic, consistent and often the easier and more predictable surface.
- **Bonded leather**: common on notebooks and folders.
- **Suede and nubuck**: open and fibrous, which changes the result considerably.
- **Notebook and diary covers**: the most common item by volume.
- **Folders, menu covers and document wallets**: hospitality and corporate.
- **Flat panels and cut pieces**: printed before they are assembled into a finished product.

## Printing capabilities

Leather takes ink well when it is the right leather, and these are the options:

- **Direct UV printing**: cured onto the surface with nothing applied over it.
- **Full colour**: logos, photographic artwork and Arabic calligraphy.
- **White ink**: so brand colours hold on dark and coloured leather, which is most of it.
- **Raised and textured effects**: a logo built up in layers of ink so it can be felt, which reads as considered on a gift.
- **Personalisation**: a different name on every cover with no extra setup.
- **Print on flat pieces before assembly**: for makers producing their own goods.
- **Sample first**: close to essential on this material.

## Genuine leather or PU

These are two different materials that happen to look alike, and they print differently enough that it changes what we recommend.

### PU and leatherette

Synthetic leather is manufactured, so it is consistent: the same surface across the whole piece and the same surface from one order to the next. That predictability makes it the easier material to print, and it is why most branded notebooks and folders are PU.

It is also flat and even in colour, so white ink behaves predictably underneath a logo.

### Genuine leather

Real hide varies in grain, absorbency, thickness and colour across a single piece, let alone between batches. It also carries a finish or topcoat, and that coating, not the leather, is what the ink bonds to. Aniline, pigmented and waxed finishes are different grounds.

The other factor is flex. Leather bends in use, and a cured ink film has limits, so a print on a cover that folds constantly is a different proposition from one on a rigid panel. Both are workable, but genuine leather is the case where we most want a sample before quoting. We flex the printed sample before a run. How well the print stands up to rubbing depends on the finish of the leather, so we judge it on the sample and do not promise it in advance.

## What to send before we can quote

On leather, a physical sample is the difference between a quote and a guess:

- **A sample piece**: the most useful thing you can send. Genuine and PU are not distinguishable from a photograph.
- **The item**: notebook, folder, panel, bag component.
- **Dimensions**, and the print area.
- **Genuine, bonded or PU**, if you know.
- **The colour and finish**: smooth, grained, suede, waxed.
- **Quantity**, and whether pieces are personalised.
- **Artwork**, and whether the logo should be raised.
- **Whether the item is assembled** or still flat.

## How it works

We identify the material and the finish and confirm what the surface will take.

Test

We print your actual leather and check it, including how it behaves when the piece is flexed.

Produce

The batch is printed, checked and packed.

## Leather we have printed

## Technical considerations

Unlike a rigid panel, leather moves, stretches and creases in normal use. That, plus the fact that it is almost always finished rather than raw, is what governs the job.

What matters:

### The finish, not the hide

Genuine leather carries a topcoat, and the ink bonds to that. Aniline, pigmented and waxed finishes are different surfaces, and a heavily waxed or silicone-treated piece is a poor ground.

### Flex

A cover that folds every day puts a cured ink film under repeated strain, and we do not promise that a print on a working fold will never crack. Rigid panels and areas away from the fold are the safer placement, so tell us where the artwork sits.

### Absorbency

Suede and nubuck are open and fibrous, so ink sits differently and fine detail softens. Smooth finished leather holds detail far better.

### Colour variation

Genuine hide varies across a piece. Two notebooks from the same order can differ slightly, and white under the artwork is what keeps the brand colour consistent.

### Print before assembly

Flat pieces print better than assembled items with seams, stitching and thickness variation. Send components where you can.

### Heat

Leather is sensitive to heat, and curing is managed accordingly. Another reason to sample rather than assume.

### Testing is the norm here

Leather and PU are the substrates where a printed sample most often changes what we recommend.

## Common questions

### Is there a minimum order for leather printing?

No. There is no screen, plate or die to make, so we print a single cover, a short personalised run or a full corporate order. Genuine leather is still tested on a sample piece first, whatever the quantity.

### Do you supply the notebooks and folders, or do we?

Normally you supply them. Sun Studio prints leather and PU goods but does not make them, so notebooks, folders, panels or cut pieces are delivered to our Al Quoz studio in Dubai. Include a spare piece of the same material so we can test before the run.

### How long does a leather printing order take?

There is no fixed figure, because the material test comes first. Once you approve the sample we quote a lead time for your quantity, and personalised names add no setup time. Tell us your event or delivery date when you ask for the quote.

### How is UV printing different from embossing, debossing or foil on leather?

Embossing and debossing press a shape into the leather, foil stamping applies metallic foil with a heated die, and laser marking burns the surface. UV printing lays full-colour ink on the surface, so it carries photographs, gradients and brand colours. We print only: we do not emboss, deboss, foil or laser.

### Can every notebook carry a different name?

Yes. There is no screen or plate, so a different name on each cover adds no setup cost, which is why branded notebook and folder orders with personalised names often come here. Send the list of names with the artwork.

### Can you print suede or nubuck?

It is possible, but the open, fibrous surface takes ink differently and fine detail softens. Send a sample and we will show you honestly what it looks like before you commit.

### Should items be sent assembled or flat?

Flat wherever possible. Panels and cut pieces print better than assembled items, where seams, stitching and changes in thickness get in the way. Finished notebooks and folders with a flat cover are fine.

### Can you print a raised logo?

Yes. The logo is built up in layers of ink so it can be felt as well as seen. It is raised ink on the surface, not embossing pressed into the leather, and it is a common request on notebook covers.
