The graphic is printed directly onto the ACP, acrylic, metal or board rather than applied as vinyl over it. That removes the seams, bubbles and lifting edges that applied signage is detailed around, and it holds fine bilingual type cleanly. We are the printing step, not a sign contractor: fabrication, illumination, installation and permits stay with your signage company or contractor unless we have agreed otherwise for the job. Fine bilingual type holds without the weeding and edge lift that cut vinyl brings.* ## Printed signs or applied vinyl Most signage in the region is still made by applying printed or cut vinyl to a blank panel. Both approaches work, and they fail differently. ### Applied vinyl Fast, familiar and replaceable: the graphic can be stripped and a new one applied to the same panel, which suits tenancies that change. The weaknesses are at the edges and at scale. Cut vinyl has to be weeded, which is punishing on fine Arabic script; large panels need more than one drop, so there are seams; and in UAE heat, applied film is under constant stress. ### Direct printing The ink is on the panel, so there is no film to lift at a corner, no seam across a directory board, and no weeding. Fine bilingual type and small point sizes reproduce as drawn. The trade-off is that the graphic and the panel are now one thing. What to think about: ### The panel is the substrate An ACP sign, an acrylic sign and a stainless steel sign are three different adhesion problems. The pages on [acrylic printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/acrylic-printing-dubai/) and [metal and aluminium printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/metal-aluminium-printing-dubai/) cover the preparation each material needs. ### Contrast Legibility depends on contrast between the type and its background far more than on size. On clear or brushed panels, that usually means white ink underneath. ### Arabic typography Arabic script has fine joins and diacritics that cut vinyl struggles with. Supply it as outlined vector and it prints as drawn. ### Fabricate first Routing, cutting and folding happen before printing, so the graphic lands correctly on the finished shape. ### Exterior exposure UAE sun and heat test any surface layer. For external signage we print and check a sample rather than quote a lifespan. ### Approvals Statutory and municipality signage often has to meet a specification set by the authority or the project. We print to the specification you supply; obtaining approvals stays with you or your consultant. ### Consistency across a schedule A building's signs should match each other. Running the schedule as one batch is how that is achieved. ## Common questions ### Do you fabricate and install signs, or only print them? We print. Most of our signage work comes from signage companies and fit-out contractors who fabricate the panels, send them to Al Quoz for printing and install them on site. Cutting, illumination, installation and permits stay with your contractor unless we have agreed something different for the job. Ask when you send the schedule. ### Can you print Arabic and English on the same sign? Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to print rather than cut vinyl. Arabic script has fine joins and diacritics that are difficult to weed as cut vinyl but reproduce cleanly when printed. Supply the artwork as vector with type outlined. ### Do you supply the sign panels or should we? Either. Most signage companies and contractors supply and fabricate their own panels and use us for printing. If you would rather we sourced them, send the schedule with sizes and material. ### Is there a minimum order for printed signs? No. We print one replacement door plate or a full building schedule. Lead time is quoted per job once the sample sign is approved, because it depends on the number of panels, the material and whether the panels arrive already fabricated. ### Can you print signs that are already cut to shape? Yes. Routed profiles, shaped panels and cut letters are printed after fabrication and registered to the shape. Send the cutting file with the artwork so the print lines up with the edge. ### Is printed signage suitable for outdoors? Indoor signs are the simpler case. Outdoors it depends on the panel, the exposure and the cleaning. UAE sun and heat are demanding on any surface layer, so for exterior signage we print a test piece and assess it rather than make a blanket claim. ### Can you do braille and tactile signage? Yes, as a separate build rather than as ordinary printing, because raised elements have their own requirements. No. Statutory and municipality signage usually has to meet a specification set by the authority or the project consultant. We print to the specification you supply; the approval process stays with you or your consultant. ### Can you match an existing sign? Usually. Send a photograph and, if possible, one of the existing signs. Matching colour and finish across old and new is far more reliable with a physical reference than with a colour code alone. ### What artwork do you need? Vector artwork with all type outlined, at the finished sign size, plus the cutting file if the panel is shaped.
