The image sits on the stone itself, so the veining and the depth of the material stay part of what you see. It is used for feature and cladding panels, lobby and reception walls, memorial and commemorative plaques, hotel and villa interiors, and bespoke stone signage. You supply the stone, cut and finished, and we print the loose pieces on the flatbed before they are installed. A polished granite and an open travertine are barely the same problem: - **Marble**: the most requested, and the one where veining showing through the print is usually the point. - **Granite**: dense and hard, with a crystalline surface. - **Limestone and travertine**: open and porous, which changes how much ink the surface takes. - **Engineered and quartz stone**: a resin-bound surface rather than a natural one, so it behaves differently again. - **Honed, matte and brushed finishes**: generally the friendlier surfaces for ink. - **Polished finishes**: the hardest case, and where preparation and testing matter most. - **Slabs, tiles, plaques and offcuts**: from small commemorative pieces to full panels. ## Printing capabilities What suits your stone depends on its porosity and finish, which is why we test before quoting anything substantial: - **Direct UV printing**: cured onto the stone with nothing applied over it. - **Print without white**: colour laid so the veining and colour of the stone read through the image and become part of it. - **White ink base**: where a design has to hold its own colour against a dark or heavily veined stone. - **Full-colour artwork**: photographic images, calligraphy, pattern and fine lettering. - **Raised and textured effects**: ink built up so lettering or a motif can be felt, which suits plaques. - **Large panels**: cladding and feature-wall scale printed in one pass. - **Surface preparation**: cleaning, and an adhesion promoter where the stone calls for it. *Large wall panels carrying a green and grey marble pattern, photographed during fit-out.* ## Polished stone or honed stone If you can choose the finish before the stone is ordered, this is the decision that most affects how the print behaves. ### Honed, matte and brushed A honed surface is flat and slightly open. It gives ink somewhere to sit and generally takes a print more readily than a polished one. It also reads differently: a matte stone with colour on it looks like a printed material, which suits interior panels, plaques and signage where legibility matters more than gloss. ### Polished Polishing closes the surface and makes it glassy. That is exactly what makes polished marble beautiful and exactly what makes it a harder ground for ink, closer to printing on glass than on stone. It is not impossible, and the result can be striking because the gloss stays under the image. Stone is the substrate we most want in our hands before quoting. - **The stone type**: marble, granite, limestone, travertine, engineered. - **The finish**: polished, honed, brushed, flamed. - **Whether it is sealed**, and with what if you know. - **Panel dimensions, thickness and weight** of each piece, so we can confirm handling. - **Quantity**, and whether pieces are identical. - **The artwork**, and whether the veining should show through or be covered. - **Indoor or outdoor**, and any exposure to water, sun or cleaning chemicals. ## How it works **Step 1** Send A sample offcut if possible, plus stone type, finish, sizes and artwork. **Step 2** Review We assess porosity, finish and sealing, and how the veining should interact with the design. **Step 3** Test We print your actual stone. On this substrate a sample is close to essential rather than optional. **Step 4** Produce Panels are printed, checked and packed for the workshop or site. ## Printed stone and surface work Surface work printed direct in Al Quoz: wall panels with a marble pattern, printed tiles, and a feature wall printed with a stone-masonry image. Two slabs sold under the same name can differ in porosity, hardness and finish, and that is before anyone has sealed one of them. What governs the result: ### Porosity An open limestone drinks ink and mutes colour; a dense granite does not. The same artwork will not look the same on both. ### Sealer Most installed stone is sealed, and a sealer is a coating. The ink meets the sealer, not the stone, so what was used and how long ago genuinely matters. ### Polish A polished surface is closed and glassy, which puts it closer to glass than to stone as a printing problem, and makes preparation and testing important. ### Veining and colour variation Natural stone is not a uniform ground. Colour printed without white will shift across the veining, which is often the intended effect and occasionally a problem. ### Surface texture Flamed, brushed and split faces have relief that reads through the image and limits fine detail. ### Outdoor exposure Sun, heat and rain act on a cured surface layer. In the UAE climate we test a piece and stay candid: we do not quote an outdoor lifespan. There is no minimum: one plaque or a full set of cladding panels. There is no fixed lead time either, because the test on your offcut comes first. Once you approve the sample we quote the time for your panel schedule, so send the site programme with the enquiry. ### Do you supply the marble or stone? No. Sun Studio prints stone but does not quarry, cut, sell or install it. Your fabricator or marble supplier cuts and finishes the pieces, they are delivered to our Al Quoz studio in Dubai, and we print them and pack them for the workshop or site. ### Printing, painting or engraving on marble: what is the difference? Engraving cuts into the stone and leaves a carved mark with no colour of its own. Hand painting is a one-off by an artist. UV printing reproduces a digital file in full colour on the surface, including photographs and fine lettering, and repeats it exactly from panel to panel. This service is the printing. ### Will the veining still show through? If you want it to. Printing colour without a white base lets the veining and the stone colour read through the image, which is usually the reason to print on marble at all. Where a design must hold its own colour, white is laid down first and the stone is covered. ### Does it matter if the stone is sealed? Yes, a great deal. A sealer is a coating, so the ink bonds to the sealer and not to the stone. Tell us whether the piece is sealed and, if you know, with what and when. It changes the answer. ### Can you print commemorative plaques? Yes. Plaques and dedication panels are a common request, and raised ink can be used so lettering is felt as well as seen. Send the stone, the size and the wording. ### Do you need a sample of my stone? Wherever possible, yes. Stone varies more than any other substrate we handle, and an offcut lets us test adhesion and see how colour sits against the veining before anything is committed. ### Can you print large cladding panels? Yes, one panel at a time on the flatbed. We do not publish a maximum slab size or weight, because handling depends on the piece. Send the dimensions, thickness and weight of each panel with the stone type, and we confirm before you deliver. ## Technology used **Direct Color Systems UV84**: the flatbed used for stone panels and plaques.
