Printing on wood this way puts the image onto the board itself rather than onto a vinyl wrap or a laminate, which is what lets a printed panel keep the flatness of a painted finish while carrying photographic detail. It is used across UAE joinery and fit-out work: feature walls and wall cladding, furniture and cabinet fronts, headboards, reception panels, shop fittings and decorative screens. Flat, consistent and predictable, and the best surface of the group for photographic work. - **Primed and sealed MDF**: the ideal case: the sealer gives a uniform, non-absorbent ground, so colour sits on top instead of soaking in. - **Raw MDF**: printable, but absorbent, and the face and the edge drink ink at different rates. - **Natural wood and veneer**: where the grain stays visible through the print, which is often the point. - **Plywood**: including birch ply, where the face veneer decides how sharp the result is. - **Laminated and melamine-faced board**: a print onto that facing, not onto the wood, so the facing governs adhesion. - **Joinery components and furniture fronts**: cabinet doors, panels and shaped pieces, printed flat after machining and before assembly and finishing. Finished and upholstered pieces have their own page: [furniture printing](https://www.sunstudio.ae/services/furniture-printing-dubai/). ## Printing capabilities What applies depends on the board, and the difference between a sealed and an unsealed panel is larger than most people expect: - **Direct UV printing**: a UV print on wood is cured onto the board with nothing laminated over it. - **White ink**: printed as a base so colour reads true on a dark, coloured or strongly grained board. - **Print through to the grain**: colour laid without a white base so the timber shows through and becomes part of the image. - **Full-colour photographic work**: stone, marble, concrete and timber effects, murals and pattern, at panel scale. - **Raised and textured effects**: ink built up so a pattern can be felt, which suits decorative wall panels. - **Varnish**: gloss or matte over selected areas. - **Large-format panels**: full sheet-scale work printed in one pass rather than tiled across joins. ![A black line drawing of the Dubai skyline printed across staggered whitewashed timber planks](https://www.sunstudio.ae/svc/wood/wood-printed-panel-02.jpg) *Printed direct onto the board. No wrap, no laminate, no seam across the face.* ## Natural wood or MDF They are chosen for opposite reasons, and knowing which you are printing on changes what the finished panel can look like. Photographic artwork holds detail on it, colour stays even across a large panel, and a sealed sheet behaves almost like a rigid board. The catch is the edges. A cut MDF edge is far more absorbent than the face, so a design that wraps around an edge, or a panel where the edge is left exposed, needs that discussed up front. ### Natural wood and veneer Timber brings grain, colour variation and texture that no print can imitate, and the usual reason to print on it is to let that show through: colour laid without a heavy white base so the wood reads underneath the image. That also means the board is part of the result: two panels from different boards will not match exactly, open-grain species hold ink differently from close-grained ones, and an oiled or waxed surface is a problem rather than a finish. Raw or sealed, not oiled, is what we want to receive. ## Who this is for Board work reaches us mostly through: - **Joinery and carpentry workshops**: who machine and assemble but do not print. - **Fit-out contractors**: wall cladding and panel packages on an interiors programme. - **Interior designers and architects**: specifying a printed finish instead of a wallpaper or a laminate. - **Furniture makers**: cabinet fronts, headboards and decorative panels. - **Retail and shopfitting**: fixtures, fascias and display joinery. - **Event and exhibition builders**: printed board for stands and temporary builds. ## What to send before we can quote Board is quick to price once we know what the surface actually is: - **Panel dimensions**: width and height of each panel. - **Board type**: MDF, plywood, natural timber, veneer or melamine-faced. - **Thickness**. - **Surface condition**: raw, primed, sealed, painted or laminated. Glass gives ink very little to hold onto; board gives it too much. It is porous, and how much it drinks decides how the colour comes out. What governs the result: ### Absorbency Raw MDF pulls ink into the surface, which mutes colour and softens fine detail. A sealed or primed board holds the ink on top, where it belongs. If you can seal before sending, do. ### Edges A cut MDF edge is dramatically more absorbent than the face. Artwork that runs over an edge needs planning, and an exposed printed edge is worth sampling. ### Moisture Board moves with humidity, and a panel that arrives damp from a site container is not a stable ground. Panels should be dry and acclimatised. ### Grain and texture Open grain shows through the print. That is usually wanted on timber and rarely wanted on a photographic mural, which is why the board choice and the artwork have to be decided together. ### Melamine and laminate facings The print bonds to the facing, not to the wood. Some facings take ink well and some are deliberately low-energy to resist marking, so these are worth testing: send a photograph and, for a real project, a sample piece. ### Existing finishes Oil, wax and silicone polish are the enemy. Send boards raw or sealed rather than finished. ### Flatness A bowed panel does not hold a consistent distance from the printhead. Thin sheets over a large area are worth discussing. ## Common questions ### Can you print directly onto wood and MDF? Yes. UV ink is printed onto MDF, plywood, veneer or natural timber and cured immediately. How the colour comes out depends heavily on whether the board is raw or sealed, because raw board absorbs ink into the surface. Send a photograph of the board and we will say what to expect. ### Is there a minimum order for wood or MDF printing? No. One panel is a normal job, and so is a package of panels for a fit-out. The quotation depends on the panel sizes, the board and its surface, the ink coverage and whether the panels are identical, not on reaching a quantity. ### Do you supply the boards, or do we? Normally you do. Boards usually come from the joinery workshop or the fit-out contractor, cut to size and ideally sealed or primed. We print them flat and they go back for assembly and finishing. If the board is not bought yet, ask us first, because the surface decides the result. ### Do you print small wooden pieces as well as panels? Yes. Alongside panels we print smaller pieces such as wooden awards, sign blanks and name panels in full colour. The same rules apply as for a large board: raw, sealed or lacquered changes the result, and oiled or waxed wood is a problem. Send a photograph and the dimensions. ### What is the largest panel you can print? Panels run on the IQDEMY EVO 2500, a belt flatbed 2.5 m wide, so full sheets print in one pass rather than tiled. We still assess each job from the panel size, thickness and quantity, because flatness and handling matter as much as raw dimensions. Send the sizes and we will confirm. ### Will the print survive in a bathroom or a kitchen? That depends on the board and the exposure more than on the ink. Board itself moves with moisture, so for humid areas the substrate choice and any sealing matter first. Tell us where the panel is going and we will say what is sensible. ### How long does a wood or MDF printing job take? There is no fixed figure. Lead time is quoted per job once we have seen the board and the artwork. It depends on the number and size of panels, whether the board needs sealing first and whether a test piece is printed, which we do on unfamiliar or unsealed board. Give us your site date at the start. ### Can I send oiled or waxed timber? Please do not. Oil, wax and silicone polish sit between the ink and the wood and are a common cause of adhesion failure. Raw or sealed board is what we want to receive. ### What artwork do you need? High-resolution raster sized for the finished panel for photographic and material-effect artwork, and vector for logos, type and pattern.
