Why a Print Studio Runs a 50L Dehumidifier: the Stadler Form Lukas Pro

Most people buy a dehumidifier because a wall is damp or a room smells. We bought ours for a different reason: in a print studio, the air is part of the process.

Dust that is floating at eleven in the morning is sitting on a panel at midday, and if it lands between cleaning and printing it cures into the ink as a visible speck. Humidity is quieter about it: a film of moisture on a non-porous surface can get between the pre-treatment and the surface, and absorbent materials change dimension as they take it up. Both of those are air problems. Air conditioning influences temperature and humidity, but what it actually holds depends on the system, the outside-air load and how it is run — which is why we measure the room rather than assume it.

So we run a Stadler Form Lukas Pro, a 50 litre dehumidifier that is also an air purifier, bought from stadlerform.ae. We have since added more units. This is what it does and why it earns its place on a production floor.

The two air problems a print studio actually has

Dubai does not have a mild summer. Al Quoz runs humid for months, and every time a roller door opens the outside comes in. In a workshop that is only a comfort question; in a print studio it is a quality one.

Airborne dust is the first problem. Dust and airborne particles become a print defect if they settle on a cleaned substrate before the ink lands, or on wet ink before it cures. UV ink cures in the same pass it is laid down, so whatever is on the surface at that moment is fixed under the cured film. Reprinting a panel because of one speck costs the material, the machine time and the delivery date.

Humidity is the second. Pre-treatment can change surface chemistry, improve wetting or leave an adhesion-promoting interface, depending on the material and the treatment used, and a microscopic film of condensed moisture can interfere with that. Absorbent substrates behave differently too — wood, canvas, paper and board take up moisture from the air and change dimension, which shows up as registration drift on a long run.

Stable air is not a luxury in that environment. It is the cheapest quality control there is.

Why the Lukas Pro, and what 50 litres a day actually means

The Lukas Pro removes up to 50 litres of moisture a day and is rated for rooms up to 175 square metres. That number is the reason we chose it: a production hall is one large open volume, and a domestic unit rated for a bedroom simply cannot keep up with it. One machine covering the floor is easier to live with than four small ones in corners.

It holds 5.2 litres in the tank, which is a long run between emptying, and it takes a drainage hose for continuous operation so nobody has to think about it at all. On a working floor, the second option is the one you end up using.

It is Swiss-designed, and it looks it. That matters more than it sounds: a studio that shows clients around does not want an industrial box in the corner of the room.

We tried other machines first

This was not our first dehumidifier. We worked through several units before the Lukas Pro, and every one of them failed on the same three things in a print studio.

The first was capacity. Machines sold for a bedroom are rated for a bedroom, and in an open production hall they run all day without ever pulling the humidity down. You end up buying three and still losing.

The second was noise. A dehumidifier that roars is a dehumidifier somebody switches off, and a machine that is off does nothing. Ours sits a few metres from operators who are concentrating on registration all day.

The third was service. When a unit needed a part, the answer was a phone number that rang out and a wait measured in weeks. For equipment that runs every working day, that is the specification nobody puts on the box and everybody discovers later.

The part we did not expect: it is an air purifier too

The Lukas Pro is a 2-in-1. Alongside the dehumidifier it runs HEPA filtration — an H11 filter, in Stadler Form's own specification — which captures dust, pollen, allergens, fine airborne particles and bacteria.

That is the feature we would have under-valued on paper and now rate highest. Less dust in the air means less dust settling on a cleaned substrate, which means fewer specks cured into a finish and fewer reprints. It is a quality control device that happens to also dry the room.

One thing it is not, and we want to be exact about this: a HEPA filter handles airborne particles. It is not a control for solvent vapour or the chemistry in UV inks, primers, cleaners and adhesion promoters. What governs that is the safety data sheet for the specific product, the ventilation and extraction in the room, the handling procedure and the protective equipment the SDS calls for. Dust control and moisture control are what this machine does well; they sit alongside those requirements rather than replacing any of them. The staff noticed before the numbers did. The air in the studio simply feels cleaner to work in through a full shift, and that is not a small thing in a building where machines run all day.

Quiet enough to sit next to people all day

High-capacity dehumidifiers have a reputation for noise, and it is usually deserved. The Lukas Pro runs from 38 dB in Night Mode, which is quiet enough that it sits in an occupied room without anyone raising their voice over it.

On a floor where operators are concentrating on setup and registration all day, that is the difference between a machine that stays on and a machine that gets switched off.

What it did to how the room feels — and to the air conditioning

Comfort is not only temperature. Humid air at 24 degrees feels heavier and warmer than dry air at the same reading, because sweat evaporates more slowly. Take the moisture out and the same thermostat setting feels cooler.

In practice that has meant we are not pushing the air conditioning as hard to keep the studio comfortable for the team. We are not going to publish an energy figure we have not measured properly — but the room reaches a comfortable state and stays there, and the AC is doing less work to hold it.

Five years of warranty, and a service team that turns up

The Lukas Pro carries an extended five-year warranty, which for equipment that runs every working day is the specification that matters most after capacity.

The part a spec sheet will not tell you is what happens when something needs attention.
