What Can You Print on Acoustic Panels? Logos, Photos and Patterns for UAE Interiors
Almost any artwork can go onto an acoustic panel. What decides whether it looks good is the match between the image and the panel: its colour, its texture and how much ink the design asks for.
The short answer
Almost any artwork can be printed onto an acoustic panel: a company logo, a photograph, an illustration, a geometric pattern, a map, lettering or teaching graphics. Sun Studio prints it in UV ink directly onto the panel face at its studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, for interiors across the UAE. The panels come from you or your supplier, and there is no minimum order.
What decides whether it looks good is not the image. It is the match between the image and the panel: its colour, its texture and how much ink the design asks for. What people usually print
Logos and brand graphics. A logo behind a reception desk or across a meeting room wall is the most common request. Flat colours and bold shapes suit a felt surface well. Very thin strokes and small lettering are the parts to check on a sample.
Photographs. Landscapes, city views and product images all print. A photograph on felt looks softer than the same file on a rigid board, because the fibres break up fine detail. Large subjects with clear contrast work better than busy images.
Artwork and illustration. Line drawings, calligraphy and painted artwork print well, and line work keeps most of the panel surface free of ink.
Patterns. Geometric repeats, stripes and chevrons are the easiest designs to run across many panels, because a small misalignment between panels is far less visible than it is in a face or a line of text.
Wood, stone and 3D effects. These can be printed, and the two clips below show samples from our own press. Be realistic about the result: the panel keeps its own texture, so a marble image on felt reads as a printed picture of marble, not as stone. If a real timber look matters, a slatted timber acoustic panel is the better starting point.
Educational and wayfinding graphics. Maps, alphabets, timelines and room names suit schools, nurseries and libraries, where the acoustic panels are often the largest free surface in the room.
How the panel changes the result
Panel colour. Printed colour takes on the colour of the panel underneath it. On a white or pale grey panel, colours stay close to the file. On a charcoal or coloured panel, light colours need a layer of white ink underneath them. That works, but it adds ink to the surface, so dark panels suit line work and limited areas of colour better than a full photograph.
Texture. PET felt and fabric are not flat. Small type, hairlines and fine gradients lose sharpness. As a rule, design for the distance the wall is seen from, not for the screen you are designing on.
Ink coverage. This is the point that is specific to acoustic panels. The panel absorbs sound because its surface is open. A design that floods the whole face with heavy ink starts to close that surface. Designs that leave part of the panel colour showing are kinder to the panel and often look better too. Let the panel colour do some of the work: print a logo on a grey panel, not a grey background with a logo in it.
Perforated and slatted panels. On perforated board the holes must stay open, and they will interrupt the image, so bold artwork reads better than detail. On slatted timber panels the print sits on the slat faces, and the gaps between slats break the image into strips.
One panel, a large panel, or a whole wall
A single panel is the simplest job: one file, one print. With no minimum order, one printed panel is also the sensible way to test a design before ordering a room's worth.
Large panels. Our press takes panels up to 2.5 metres wide. The other dimension is the panel's length as it travels through the printer, which is not the same thing as thickness. Length is not fixed by the press in the same way, so long panels can usually be printed in one piece. Tell us the thickness and weight of your panel when you ask, so we can confirm how it will be handled.
A set of panels. One image can run across many panels. Send the wall elevation with every panel's size and position and the gap between panels. We split the artwork to that layout and agree the panel order with you before printing. Keep faces, small text and logos away from the joints, and give your installer the same sequence.
Where printed acoustic panels fit
- Offices: the brand in reception and meeting rooms, or a pattern that calms an open-plan floor.
- Hotels and restaurants: artwork that belongs to the interior scheme, in rooms where hard finishes make speech tiring.
- Schools and nurseries: maps, letters and learning graphics in noisy classrooms and corridors.
- Studios and content rooms: a backdrop that appears on camera and treats the room at the same time.
- Clinics and waiting areas: calmer imagery in rooms where voices carry.
What printing does not include
Sun Studio prints panels. We do not manufacture acoustic panels, install them, or advise on how much absorption a room needs. Choose the panel with your acoustic supplier or consultant for its performance first, then bring it to us for the artwork.
Printing is also not a test. A printed sample shows you colour, sharpness and finish. It does not show that the printed panel still meets the manufacturer's sound absorption figure or fire classification. If your project specifies either, ask the panel manufacturer how a printed face affects the rating before you order.
