A Printed Dome Ceiling on Stretched Acoustic Panel
A confidential client wanted the reception of their home to open upward. The architecture gave a domed recess with a chandelier hanging from its centre.
Sun Studio printed the surface that fills it: a misted forest, printed onto acoustic panel and stretched into the dome.

The requirement
The ceiling had to read as depth rather than decoration, and had to work as acoustic treatment rather than sit on top of it.
What we did
The artwork was laid out for the shape it would take once stretched, not for the flat sheet it was printed on.
The print went onto the acoustic panel itself, so the surface that absorbs sound is the same surface that carries the image.
Technical considerations
A dome is not a flat surface, and artwork laid out for a flat sheet distorts the moment it is stretched into a curve. The print also had to hold up directly beneath a chandelier, where light rakes across the surface and shows every flaw.
The outcome
A reception ceiling that reads as depth rather than decoration, in a room that sounds calmer than it looks.
