Direct to Wall Printing in a Business Bay Office

The general manager’s room in PRO TECHnology’s Business Bay office has a corner in it. Sun Studio printed a single image across both faces of that corner — the general manager’s own cars crossing the desert with the Dubai skyline behind them — straight onto the wall.

The machine was the wallPen E2. PRO TECHnology is our parent group, so this one was printed at home.

The requirement

Two things make an office wall print awkward. The first is the corner: an image running across two wall faces has to meet exactly at the edge, because the eye catches a broken join instantly. The second is the office itself — a room in daily use cannot be handed to installers for a day.

What we did

The printer came to the wall rather than the wall being made in panels and brought to the room. The wallPen travels along the foot of the wall while the head scans vertically, curing the ink as it goes.

The image was set out to cross the corner as one picture, so the two faces meet without a visible join.

Technical considerations

Every usual alternative carries a cost that shows up later. Vinyl wallpaper in Dubai humidity lifts and bubbles; a pen or a chair back scratches it, and a scratch on vinyl means replacing a panel rather than repairing it. Acrylic means fixings, installation time, and people working around a desk somebody needs.

The outcome

A wall that carries the image itself rather than something stuck onto it — no seam at the corner, nothing to bubble in the humidity, and no working day lost to installation.
