Wall Printing in Dubai: How a Mural Is Printed Straight Onto the Wall

A direct to wall printer is brought to site and prints the artwork onto the wall itself. What the machine does, what the surface has to be, how long it takes and what drives the price.

Wall printing in Dubai means what it sounds like: the printer is brought to the wall and the image is printed onto the wall itself. No roll, no film, no adhesive, no panel behind the graphic. Sun Studio runs a wallPen E2, a German-built direct to wall printer, and takes it to site across the UAE from Al Quoz First, printing direct to surface since 2011.

Every other method is two jobs: something is made elsewhere, then carried in and fixed up. That second job is where seams, bubbles and lifted corners come from. Printing at the wall removes it, along with the roll width that dictates how a design is tiled.

How does a wall printer actually work?

It is a plotter that works against the wall rather than over a flat bed. The machine is set on the floor along the wall, levelled and aligned to a horizontal reference, and the print head passes over the surface, laying the image down band by band at final size.

Curing is what makes vertical printing possible. UV LED lamps travel with the head and cure each pass as it is laid, so the ink is solid before gravity has any say in it. Nothing runs, nothing sags, and there is no drying time afterwards.

  • The printer travels to the wall, so the graphic is produced at final size in place
  • UV LED curing on each pass, which is why ink does not run down a vertical surface
  • Non-contact: the head passes clear of the wall and never touches it
  • No sheet, no adhesive, no seam, and no repeat unless the design wants one

Which wall surfaces can be printed on?

Most of the ones a building already has: plaster and skim, painted plasterboard, concrete, render, brick, cement board, wood and MDF, tile, glass and coated metal. Two properties matter more than the name: whether the surface gives the ink a key, and how smooth it is.

Plaster and emulsion paint hold a cured film well, because their light texture gives it a key. Glass, glazed tile and powder-coated metal give none, which is what a primer is for. Smoothness sets the ceiling on detail: a skimmed wall holds fine type and photographic texture, a coarse render softens it.

  • Plaster, skim and painted plasterboard, the most common and most forgiving
  • Concrete, fair-faced concrete, render and brick, better for bold artwork than fine detail
  • Glass, glazed tile and coated metal, primed first and often better as a panel

How is the wall prepared, and does it need priming?

Sound, clean, dry and fully cured, which is what a decorator would want before painting. Loose paint, powdering plaster and dust fail the same way: the print bonds to the top layer and goes with it if that layer lets go. The final coat should already be on, since nothing goes over the print. Active damp is a stop, not a delay.

Priming is only needed where the surface will not hold ink on its own, so glass, glazed tile and coated metal take an adhesion promoter first. Removable elements are better brought to the studio, pre-treated on the Modico ModiTreat, which combines four pre-treatment technologies in one machine, then printed flat on the Direct Color Systems UV84.

  • No flaking, chalking or powdering, and no loose filler
  • Clean, dry, final coat cured, no active damp
  • Floor space along the wall, power, and access hours confirmed

How sharp is the print, and how long does it last?

Sharp enough to read as a photograph at normal viewing distance, and what limits detail is usually the surface rather than the file.

Durability comes from the same UV cure. The ink is a hardened film bonded to the wall's own surface, water resistant and scratch resistant, and it wipes down like any painted wall. With no perimeter and no bond line, there is no edge for a fingernail or a cloth to work at. The limit worth stating is that a printed wall is only as permanent as the paint beneath it: it ages as that paint ages, and fails with it if the paint was already failing.

Does wall printing work outdoors in the UAE?

Yes, with clear expectations about the sun. Gulf exteriors face high UV, long summer surface temperatures, coastal humidity and dust, and pigment exposed to that shifts over time. Saturated darks and reds are usually where it shows first.

Split the question by exposure, not by indoors and outdoors. Covered walkways, soffits, courtyards, parking structures and shaded facades behave close to interior work. A wall in direct sun all day should be planned as something to be refreshed rather than installed once, and a clear coat helps. Exterior paint must not be chalking, and damp or salt needs solving first; where a wall cannot meet that, print flat on the Direct Color Systems UV84 and fix panels instead.

How long does it take to print a wall?

Hours rather than days for a normal interior wall. Set-up is levelling, alignment and loading the artwork, and is broadly fixed. Print time scales with area, with ink coverage, and with whether a white base is needed under the colour, as it is on dark walls.

The one job Sun Studio publishes in detail is its own: a single image printed across both faces of a corner in the general manager's room at the PRO TECHnology office in Business Bay, done in two hours with the wallPen E2, in an occupied office. One wall, one set of access conditions, so it is not a quotation for yours. What it shows is the method: no room stripped out, no drying wait, no lingering smell, the space back in use the same day.

What drives the cost of wall printing in Dubai?

Square metres first, then how hard those square metres are. Two walls of identical size can price very differently, and a realistic figure comes back quickly from photographs, dimensions and a note on the surface. Preparation is the line people forget: making good, skimming or repainting belongs in the budget from the start.

  • Printed area, and how much of it is solid, dense artwork
  • Ink coverage, and whether a white base is needed under the colour
  • Surface condition and any making good, skimming or repainting first
  • Working height, access, site hours, permits, and travel outside Dubai

Common questions

How much does wall printing cost in Dubai?
Wall printing in Dubai is priced per job, against the printed area, ink coverage, whether a white base is needed, the condition of the wall and how easy it is to reach. Send photographs, dimensions and a note on the surface, and Sun Studio will quote against it: +971 4 346 7422 or info@sunstudio.ae.
Can you print onto a wall that is already painted?
Yes, an already painted wall is the most common case for direct wall printing. The paint must be sound, clean, dry and fully cured, with the final coat applied, because nothing goes on top of the print afterwards. Flaking, chalking or damp walls are made good first.
Does a printed wall mural work outdoors in the UAE?
Yes, a printed wall mural works outdoors in the UAE if the exposure is understood. Shaded facades, soffits, courtyards and parking structures behave close to interior work, while a wall in direct sun should be planned as something to be refreshed over time, with a clear coat over it. Where the surface cannot meet the preparation standard, printed panels are the better route.
Can a printed wall be changed or removed later?
Yes, a printed wall is changed by painting it out with the room's own paint and printing new artwork onto it. There is no film to strip, no adhesive residue and no patch that no longer matches.
Is wall printing better than wallpaper or vinyl?
Wall printing removes the failure points of a sheet: no perimeter to lift, no seams, no adhesive bond to survive Dubai humidity. Wallpaper and vinyl stay better where the graphic has to come off again, such as a short campaign or a leased wall.

A printed wall is judged on two things: whether the surface underneath was right, and whether the artwork was built for that wall. Both are settled before the machine leaves Al Quoz. Send photographs, dimensions and your artwork, and we will tell you what the wall needs first.
