UV Printing in Dubai: Flatbed, Cylindrical and Direct to Wall
Flat panels go on a flatbed, bottles and cans on a cylindrical press, finished walls are printed on site. How to tell which one your job needs.

UV printing is direct printing onto an object: ink is jetted straight onto the surface and cured by UV light as it lands. In Dubai it is used on glass, metal, acrylic, wood, leather, ceramic, stone and most plastics, across three presses — a flatbed for panels, a cylindrical press for round objects, and a wall printer for finished walls.
Which of the three a job needs matters far more than the brand on the datasheet. A quote for a printed glass partition and a quote for a printed aerosol can are not the same work even though both are UV printing, and a supplier who owns only one of the presses will quietly reshape the job to fit the machine it has. What is UV printing, and how does it differ from ordinary printing?
UV printing puts ink directly onto the finished object and cures it in place, with no plate, no screen and no transfer sheet. The ink is jetted from an inkjet head and photopolymerises the instant it passes under the UV lamp, so it is dry before it can spread, run or soak in.
Two consequences matter to a buyer. LED-UV curing is cold, so heat-sensitive items survive it — wax candles, coated bottles, sealed aerosol cans. And because there is no plate or screen to make, a run of one sets up much like a run of a thousand, which is what makes short runs and multiple artworks practical. Which of the three presses does my job need?
The shape of the object decides, not the material. A flatbed, a cylindrical press and a wall printer lay down the same ink and cure it the same way; what separates them is how the object and the print head are brought together.
Most UV printing companies in Dubai run a flatbed and stop there. A cylindrical press is uncommon here and a printer that travels to the wall is rarer still, which is worth knowing before one fit-out gets split across three suppliers and three colour standards. What can a UV flatbed print?
A flatbed prints anything rigid that will lie flat under the head: glass, aluminium, acrylic, wood, MDF, board, tile and stone. The object is placed on the bed, the head passes over it, and the image ends up on the material itself rather than on a film stuck to it.
Sun Studio runs two. The Direct Color Systems UV84 handles glass panel work and lays white ink, which is what makes a design read on clear or dark material. The IQDEMY Belt UV is the belt flatbed used for panel and board work at signage scale.
Two glass jobs show the range. Six partition panels in PRO TECHnology's own meeting room in Dubai, each 2.4 m tall by 1 m wide, carry the brand pattern printed into the glass rather than applied as film. For a confidential corporate client, five architectural panels of 3 m by 1 m in the managing director's office were printed with a geometric pattern in layered colour. In both cases the glass arrived cut, drilled and toughened, because glass is printed after fabrication and never before.
The same bed does flat signage. Bilingual Arabic and English wayfinding and information boards for Dubai Municipality parks and offices were printed panel by panel, each one carrying raised braille built up in cured ink rather than applied as separate beads.
How do you print all the way round a bottle or a can?
The object turns under the print head instead of passing beneath it, so the artwork wraps a full 360 degrees with no seam, no label and no shrink sleeve. The press is an LSINC PeriQ360.
Ajmal Perfumes had four body spray designs — Amber Tide, Mystic Bliss, Tropical Mango and Pear Hug — printed full-wrap directly onto aluminium aerosol cans, four SKUs from one set-up. At Beautyworld in the Dubai World Trade Centre, PRO TECHnology printed 1,000 full-wrap aluminium body spray cans in two days across several artworks, with no minimum and no setup charges.
Glass behaves the same way on the same press: roughly 1,000 mini 50 ml perfume bottles for a confidential manufacturer, four artworks, printed direct onto the glass. Because the cure is cold, sealed and pressurised containers come through it unharmed, and so does wax. Can a printer be taken to a finished wall?
Yes. The wallPen E2 travels to site, mounts against the wall and prints the artwork onto the wall itself, into the plaster and paint that are already there. Nothing is applied and nothing is stuck down, so there is no seam, no edge and no adhesive.
Body Abs Gym in Abu Dhabi had seven walls printed on site at one branch of ten. They had rejected vinyl and wallpaper first, for a reason particular to gyms: the room is humid, the walls are wiped down constantly and brushed past all day, and vinyl lifts and bubbles at its edges. The wall does have to be sound and reasonably flat. Heavy texture, damp or flaking paint prints as heavy texture, damp or flaking paint, so surface preparation is a real line in the programme rather than an afterthought.

What decides whether a surface will hold the ink?
Preparation, not the press. Adhesion is settled before printing starts, and the same ink from the same machine will hold on one panel and lift off the next if one was cleaned properly and the other was not.
Most materials need little more than to be clean and dry. PET, polycarbonate, acrylic and ABS all print well after cleaning and should not be treated as difficult substrates. The genuinely low surface energy plastics are polypropylene, polyethylene and silicone: ink beads on them until they are flamed, plasma-treated or primed, which is what the Modico ModiTreat station is for.
One preparation decision shows up in the quote. On clear or dark material, white ink is laid under the colour so the artwork reads as intended. It is an extra ink layer and an extra pass, and it is priced as one. Ink adhesion and pre-treatment goes through how a sample is tested before a run is approved.

When is UV printing the wrong answer?
When the run is long, the design is one or two flat colours and the item never varies. Screen and pad printing carry a tooling cost per colour and then print very cheaply, so past a few thousand identical pieces they can beat direct UV on unit cost. Direct UV wins where there are several artworks, short runs, variable data, or a photographic image to reproduce. UV against screen, pad and sublimation sets out where each one stops making sense.
It is also the wrong answer on anything that flexes or stretches repeatedly. Cured UV ink is a hard film, and a substrate that bends over and over will eventually crack it. Garments and stretch fabric belong to other processes, and full-colour work across soft goods is usually sublimation or textile printing rather than direct UV.
And when the surface itself is the problem — a wall in poor condition, a lacquer that releases whatever is printed on it, a moulded part still carrying silicone release agent — the honest answer is to repair the wall or change the part, not to print harder and hope.
What should you send for a quote?
Send the item, or a piece of the material it is made from. A sample settles adhesion, colour and set-up in a way that a description cannot, and it is the fastest route to a firm price.

- Artwork in vector form (AI, EPS or PDF) where it exists, high resolution otherwise
- The printed area and the object's dimensions in millimetres; for a wall, the wall in metres plus a photograph
- Quantity, and how many separate artworks that quantity covers
- Whether the substrate is clear or dark, since that decides the white ink layer
- Where the finished item will live: indoors, outdoors, in a dishwasher, in a gym
