How We UV Printed 1,000 Mini Perfume Bottles in Dubai
A confidential perfume house sent us a thousand 50 ml bottles for corporate gifting — four artworks, no labels. The production process, step by step.

A perfume manufacturer that private-labels for its own clients brought Sun Studio a corporate gifting production run: roughly one thousand 50 ml mini perfume bottles, four different artworks, everything printed directly onto the glass. No labels, no sleeves — the artwork had to be part of the bottle.
Direct UV printing suits this kind of job because a fragrance gift is judged in the hand. A label has an edge you can feel and see; ink cured onto the glass does not. And because the process is digital, four artworks across one production run cost no more setup than one. This article walks through how a run like this is actually produced — the same sequence we would apply to your bottle, whether the quantity is ten or ten thousand.
The project: 1,000 custom mini perfume bottles
The brief was corporate gifting at production scale: flat 50 ml glass bottles, black label-panel artwork with fine typography and full-colour imagery, four designs in the run, and a finish consistent enough that any two bottles pulled from different boxes read as identical. The client stays unnamed here — they produce for their own customers, and their work is their clients' branding — but the bottles photographed on this page are the actual job.
Two requirements shaped everything downstream. First, the artwork carried large areas of deep, even colour, which is unforgiving: any dust, misalignment or coverage variation shows immediately on a dark field. Second, this was a gifting deadline, not an open-ended production window, so the process had to run at a predictable rate from the first tray to the last.
Why direct UV printing instead of labels?
A label is a second object applied to the bottle: it has an edge, it can sit a fraction off-centre, and on a chilled or handled bottle its adhesive is doing constant work. Printing directly onto the glass removes that layer entirely — the artwork and the bottle become one thing, which is exactly the premium cue fragrance packaging trades on.
Direct printing also opens options a label cannot offer: white ink laid exactly where opacity is needed while the rest of the glass stays clear, colour printed over that white so it reads true, raised or varnished detail where a design calls for something you can feel, and per-bottle artwork changes at no tooling cost. That last point is what let this run carry four designs without four setups.
None of this makes labels obsolete — a label is still the right answer for some products and volumes, and no decoration method wins everywhere. For a premium gift bottle in the hundreds or low thousands, though, direct printing is usually the stronger candidate, and it is worth testing on the actual bottle before deciding.
Step 1: cleaning the bottles
Every failure mode in glass printing starts with the surface, so production starts with cleaning — not as a formality but as the step the whole result stands on. Bottles arrive carrying manufacturing residue, handling oils, fingerprints and dust, none of which are visible at arm's length and all of which sit exactly where the ink needs to bond.
Each bottle is cleaned and degreased before printing; on bare glass that typically includes an IPA wipe, though the cleaning method is chosen per bottle, because a solvent that is safe on plain glass is not automatically safe on a lacquered or decorated one. After cleaning, the print face is not touched again — a fingerprint applied after cleaning is a bond failure waiting several weeks to announce itself.
Step 2: surface preparation and adhesion testing
Two bottles that look identical can behave differently under ink. Glass composition varies, and many perfume bottles are not bare glass at the surface at all — they carry coatings, lacquers, frosting or paint, and whatever is on the surface is what the ink actually meets. Adhesion depends on that exact surface: its finish, any contamination, the cleaning, the pre-treatment and the ink system together.
Depending on that surface and on how durable the print needs to be, a primer or adhesion promoter goes down before any ink. The only reliable way to specify this is to test the actual bottle: print a sample, let it cure fully, and check adhesion before committing a thousand pieces. That is what we did here, and it is why the production run held without surprises — the surprises had already happened, on the test bottle.
Step 3: preparing the artwork
Artwork quality decides print quality before the press is involved. Vector files — a print-ready PDF, with text as outlines and colours defined — reproduce cleanly at any size; a low-resolution logo scaled up onto a bottle does not. For this run each of the four artworks was prepared as separate layers: the white base layer that gives the colours an opaque foundation on clear glass, the colour layer above it, and, where a design calls for it, a varnish or tactile layer on top.
Position and orientation are part of the artwork, not an afterthought: the file defines exactly where the print sits on the bottle face and how large it runs, so every bottle in the run inherits the same placement from the same file rather than from an operator's eye.
Step 4: positioning — why the jig matters as much as the print
For production quantities, bottle positioning becomes as important as the print itself. Even small differences in placement are visible when two bottles stand side by side in a gift box, and at a thousand pieces, "roughly centred" is not a standard.
These were flat-faced bottles, so the job ran on the flatbed with a fixture — a jig that holds a tray of bottles in exactly the same position for every cycle. Load the tray, print, unload, repeat: the jig is what turns a thousand individual placements into one placement made a thousand times. This is also where flat and cylindrical work part ways: a flat face is printed on a flatbed in a fixture, while a design that wraps around a round bottle runs on a dedicated cylindrical press that rotates the bottle under the head. This job was flat-face printing — no wrap was needed, and it would be wrong to describe it as 360° work.
Step 5: printing and curing, in one pass
Direct UV printing is simple to describe: ink is jetted onto the bottle and cured by UV light as it is laid down, so it leaves the machine finished rather than drying afterwards. In practice the print is built in layers — white first where opacity is needed, then CMYK colour, then clear varnish where the design specifies it — each cured as it goes.
On this run the white base did quiet, essential work. The artwork panels read as deep solid black with fine light-coloured typography; without an even base under the colour, that panel would go translucent against the glass and the liquid behind it. The white is invisible in the finished bottle, which is exactly the point.
Raised and tactile detail
Because each layer cures as it is printed, layers can be stacked — and stacked clear or varnish layers become detail you can feel: a raised logo, a textured border, an emblem that reads under a fingertip as well as by eye. On gift and luxury packaging this is the difference between printing that decorates a bottle and printing that feels engineered into it. Where a client's design calls for tactile detail, it is specified in the artwork as its own layer and test-printed like everything else; how high a build a given design supports depends on the artwork and the bottle, which is another thing the sample answers before the run does.
Holding consistency across 1,000 bottles
Printing one beautiful bottle is a demonstration; printing a thousand identical ones is production. Consistency came from fixing every variable once and then defending it: one artwork file per design, one jig defining position, one colour profile for the substrate, one cleaning and preparation routine applied to every tray.
Through the run, quality control is periodic and boring by design: bottles pulled and checked against the approved sample for colour, placement and coverage, print faces inspected under raking light where dust and coverage flaws actually show, and trays staged so cleaned bottles go under the head promptly rather than sitting collecting the airborne dust that settles on everything in any production space. Nothing in that list is clever. All of it is what makes bottle nine hundred match bottle nine.

What types of perfume bottles can be UV printed?
Most of what the fragrance industry uses is printable, with the same caveat every time — the exact bottle decides:
- Clear glass, with white ink doing the structural work under the colour
- Frosted glass, where the diffused surface gives colour a soft ground
- Coloured and tinted glass, printed with or without white depending on the design
- Coated, lacquered and painted bottles — printable, but the coating is the surface being printed, so these are always tested first
- Flat and flat-faced bottles, printed on the flatbed in a fixture, as this run was
- Cylindrical bottles and minis, printed with a full wrap on the cylindrical press instead
- Mini, sample and discovery-set bottles — small faces, fine artwork, the same process at a smaller scale
Corporate gifting and personalised perfume bottles
The reason this order existed is worth stating plainly: fragrance is one of the strongest corporate gifts in the Gulf, and a printed bottle turns a good gift into a branded object the recipient keeps on a shelf. The same production logic serves event and launch gifting, hotel and hospitality amenities, PR packages, and end-of-year corporate gifts — and because the process is digital, a gifting run can carry variable artwork: several designs, an event mark, even individual names, without new tooling per version.
