Raised and 3D Embossed UV Printing in Dubai: Tactile, Braille and Texture
Raised UV printing builds relief by curing ink layer on layer, so texture, tactile lettering and braille are printed with the artwork in a single run.

Ask for lettering that stands off a surface and the usual answers involve tooling. An embossing die has to be cut for the artwork. A screen has to be pulled many times over to build any real thickness. Applied letters are a separate part, cut and finished and then glued on one at a time.
Raised UV printing reaches the same place from the file that already carries the artwork. Height is built in cured ink, one layer at a time, on the same machine that prints the colour. That is why tactile signage, braille, spot gloss and textured artwork are a printing decision here rather than a fabrication one.
It also has a ceiling, and the ceiling is lower than most people expect. Worth settling before a design is signed off.
How raised UV printing actually builds height
UV ink cures under UV light by photopolymerisation, and it happens essentially instantly. That single property is what makes relief possible. The pass under the lamp is already solid by the time the head comes back, so the next pass can be laid straight on top of the last, and the one after that on top of that. Height accumulates one cured layer at a time.
The relief and the colour come out of the same file and the same run. A raised element is a channel in the artwork, usually built in white ink, that the machine prints more times than the rest. Colour prints over and around it. A clear varnish can then be laid on top, either across the whole face or only in chosen areas, which is how gloss, matt and selective shine are produced on one panel.
Curing under LED-UV is cold. Nothing on the bed is baked, so wax, sealed batteries and coated bottles come through a build that heat would deform.
What the effect is used for
The same capability appears under several names. Raised UV printing, 3D embossed printing, tactile printing and textured printing generally describe one thing: ink stacked until it can be felt.
- Tactile lettering and braille on signage, built in the same run as the printed text.
- Spot gloss and spot matt, where varnish is laid only over chosen areas of an otherwise flat print.
- Texture in artwork — brush strokes, canvas weave, grain, or a pattern that only appears when light rakes across it.
- Raised outlines, logos and detail on gifts, awards, badges and packaging.
- Panel and wall work where a printed surface is meant to read as a material rather than as an image.

Tactile and braille signage: the relief is the compliance item
Sun Studio produced a signage programme for Dubai Municipality covering public parks and indoor office wayfinding: bilingual information boards, and door, room and directional signage. Every panel carries raised braille alongside printed Arabic and English, with the braille built up in cured ink as part of the same print rather than drilled and glued in afterwards.
That pack shows what accessible signage has to do. One plate serves three readers at once: someone reading English, someone reading Arabic, and someone reading with their fingertips. The relief is not decoration on those panels. It is the part that gets inspected.
Dot height, spacing and diameter, and the bilingual requirement — Dubai requires Arabic braille, not only English — are governed by the Dubai Universal Design Code. No figures are published here, because they are revised and differ by authority, and a wrong number is paid for in re-manufacture. Take the dimensions from the code, confirm them, and put them on the drawing.
The honest limit: fractions of a millimetre, not millimetres
Relief built in ink has a practical ceiling, and it is measured in fractions of a millimetre. That is enough for braille, for characters that read clearly under a fingertip, for a raised outline noticed when an object is picked up, and for texture that changes how light sits on a surface.
It is not enough to replace deep engraving, cast metal letters or machined signage where a bold physical depth is the design intent. If a drawing shows lettering standing several millimetres proud of a wall, that is fabrication, and saying so at drawing stage costs nothing.
Two smaller trade-offs go with it. Height is press time, because each layer is another pass, so a heavily built area is priced differently from a flat print — it belongs in the same part of the conversation as what drives a quote. And a tall build has softer edges than a machined one, since the stack rounds slightly as it grows. Hairline detail is the wrong thing to build up.

Raised UV printing compared with embossing, screen build and applied letters
Raised UV printing is an established term in this market, and DESCO markets it explicitly. It has a name here because every alternative is more work. An embossing die has to be cut and is specific to that artwork. Screen printing can build thickness, but by pulling the same layer repeatedly, each pull with its own set-up. Applied letters are a separate part with an adhesive joint per letter.
Layered UV needs no tooling, no second process and no applied part. A design change is a file change rather than a new die, and with no minimum order quantity a single sample plate or one prototype object costs what one costs — which is the difference that matters on a job that must be approved before it repeats.
The comparison is not one-sided. A die-embossed sheet deforms the paper itself and shows on the reverse, which stacked ink cannot do, and over a very long run of one unchanging design the die amortises. Where the choice is genuinely close, the process comparison sets out the ground each one holds.
Relief on objects, not only on flat panels
On a private commission, 50 glass bottles supplied for the job were printed direct with a skull design threaded with glowing veins, built up in relief so the artwork can be felt as well as seen. On clear glass the build starts with white ink laid under the colour, which is an extra ink layer and appears in a quote before any relief is added above it.
What decides whether this works is the surface, not the shape. PET, polycarbonate, acrylic and ABS print well once cleaned. Polypropylene, polyethylene and silicone are low surface energy and reject ink until they have been flame, plasma or primer treated. A raised build raises the stakes on preparation rather than lowering them, because more ink is standing on the same bond — which is the subject of adhesion and pre-treatment. Bottles, glassware and award bodies are normally supplied by the client or their supplier; the work here is the printing.
What to send for a quote
Send the following and the reply can be a specification rather than a range.
- Artwork, vector where possible, with the raised elements on their own named layer.
- A note of what should be felt and what should only be seen — relief, spot gloss, spot matt, or flat.
- The substrate or the object: material, finish, whether it is clear, dark or coated, and who is supplying it.
- Sizes, quantity, and whether the job will repeat.
- For signage: the sign schedule, the governing code and its revision, and the confirmed dimensions from your code review.
- Where the piece lives — indoors, outdoors, handled daily, and what it is cleaned with.
- The date it is needed.
Common questions
Relief in printed work usually gets treated as a finishing extra. On accessible signage it is the deliverable, and on a gift or a bottle it is the thing people notice with their hands before they read anything.
