Badge Printing in Dubai: Getting Every Badge to Match

Event badges, name badges, ID cards and door plates are one buying decision. What substrate, fixing, finish and personalisation really change, and why two brands on one badge is the hard version of the job.

A badge order looks like a print job and behaves like a manufacturing job. Everything that decides whether the pack works is settled before anyone opens the artwork: what the badge is made of, how it attaches, how the face is finished, and whether every unit carries a different name.

The family is wider than most briefs admit: event badges, staff name badges, ID cards, room and door plates, engraved metal name plates. Different suppliers quote them, but one organisation wears them: the person who orders event badges in March is often the one who orders door plates in June, and expects the same navy.

This page explains those decisions and the reason behind each, so you can brief any printer better. It describes direct-to-surface printing: ink cured onto the finished material, not onto a label stuck to it.

Event badges, name badges, ID cards and door plates are one decision

What separates these products is duty cycle, not appearance. An event badge lives two days in the hands of strangers at a registration desk. A staff name badge lives years and goes on and off daily. A door plate is fixed once, then cleaned every week with a cloth and a chemical.

Duty cycle picks the substrate. Aluminium is the default where a badge should read as premium: rigid at a wearable thickness, with its own colour and texture. Brushed, mill and anodised are three different grounds, so record which one you approved. Acrylic suits thickness and cut shapes, and reverse printed on clear it puts the image behind the material. PVC is the card format behind most ID card printing; if the card also opens a door, the chip and the access system are a separate supply.

UV printing on metal: why a white base matters on aluminium

Process ink is not opaque. Lay CMYK straight onto aluminium and the metal shows through and pulls every colour towards itself. Navy goes cold, red goes brown, and the brand value measured on white paper does not arrive.

A printed white base fixes that. The build is four stages: adhesion promoter at around 2 microns, white base at around 12, CMYK plus spot at around 18, varnish and UV cure at around 10. Roughly 42 microns for a normal graphic print, which is thin: the badge still feels like metal, the brushed grain is still under your thumb, and colour sits on a controlled white ground rather than the metal's own tone.

Adhesion is a separate problem. Aluminium arrives smooth and often carries rolling oil or handling residue, and ink does not bond to a contaminant. Pre-treatment on the Modico ModiTreat cleans, degreases and primes in one step, giving the print its scratch and alcohol resistant adhesion.

The interesting move is withholding white. Where no ink is laid the metal is the artwork, and brushed aluminium moves with the light in a way no press prints, because a printed silver is a flat grey. The same profile runs at size, so UV printing on aluminium sheet gives directory boards that match the badges.

Pin or magnet, and why magnetic name badges win on tailoring

The fixing decides whether the badge is worn, which makes it more important than the print. A pin pierces the garment. On a cotton polo nobody minds. On a tailored jacket or a silk blouse the hole does not close, and staff often stop wearing the badge rather than keep marking the garment. A pack that ends up in a drawer has failed however well it was printed.

A magnetic fixing is two parts: a magnet bonded behind the badge, a steel plate behind the fabric. Nothing is pierced, the badge sits flat, and it moves between garments. In tailoring it is usually the only fixing that survives contact with the people who wear it.

Know the trade-offs. A magnet adds thickness behind the garment, a large badge on fine fabric can sag, and some wearers cannot use one for medical reasons, so put a pin or lanyard version in the pack rather than making it something a person has to ask for.

Epoxy dome or flat print: decide before the artwork, not after

An epoxy dome is clear resin poured over the printed face and cured into a lens. It magnifies the artwork, deepens colour, rounds the edge and adds real thickness. It is a second process after printing, so decide at the start: it changes artwork and fixing together.

The resin needs a boundary to flow to, usually the badge edge, so detail taken to the edge distorts where the lens curves. A dome also fills texture: over brushed aluminium the grain vanishes under a flat glassy plane. If you chose metal because it reads as metal, doming undoes the decision.

The flat alternative is not unprotected. Post-treatment on direct-to-surface work is a varnish, UV cured and tested, laid as part of the same build. It keeps the material's own surface visible, and keeps the badge thin enough for a magnet to work through a shirt.

Custom name badges in Dubai: one artwork, or a different name on every badge

Old economics still shape what buyers are offered. Screen and pad printing are excellent where one design repeats, but each colour needs its own screen or plate, so a name per person becomes a setup per person. That is why traditional suppliers put the name on a slide-in insert or a stuck-on label: the name then sits on the badge rather than in the same printed face as the logo.

Digital UV printing has no screen and no plate. Each item is placed from a file, so five hundred different names are five hundred placements inside one job and the press does not know they differ. Naming is a data step, not a second setup, and the pack runs as one job whether it carries one name or five hundred.

What goes wrong on personalised packs is never the printing. It is the list: names spelled the way each person spells their own, titles agreed in advance, Arabic set in a font that shapes correctly rather than one that breaks the joins. Fix a defined name field in the layout, and agree what happens to a name too long for it before the run.

Matching one brand colour is a profiling exercise. Matching two on one badge is the version of this job that separates suppliers.

Ohana Development ordered 5,000 aluminium VIP badges for the Manchester City Yas Residences launch: gold on navy, carrying two brand marks, each with its own colour values and its own owner. Sun Studio's scope was printing the badges. Two marks means the press cannot be tuned to favour either. Both land at once, on the same metal, under the same white base and varnish, because everything done for one is applied to the other in the same pass.

Gold is the hardest word in that brief, because gold is not a colour value, it is an expectation. Printed gold is an ink mix that has to read as gold under venue lighting, which is warmer than the office where it was approved. Navy is unforgiving differently: a dark ground punishes any inconsistency in the white base under a light element, because that base is what stops the dark coming through.

So approve a printed badge on the real substrate, never a screen and not a proof on paper, which has a different white and gloss and will agree with you about a colour the metal will not. Then run the quantity off one setup: profile, white base, ink set and varnish fixed once, all 5,000 as one job, so there is nothing between the first tray and the last for the colour to drift with. Drift comes from splitting a job across machines, material batches or weeks.

Reordering: next year's badges have to match the ones already issued

Almost every badge pack gets extended: a team grows, an event runs a second edition, a new intake needs badges that sit beside badges issued two years ago. The requirement is not print it again, it is match what is already out there.

That means holding three things: one press, one profile, one substrate specification. The profile is built per substrate, so if the aluminium changes, brushed to anodised or a different batch from a different source, the ground under the ink has moved and the colour on top moves with it. Re-sourcing the material is the usual cause of a mismatch, followed by a new supplier profiling from scratch.

Keep one badge from the original run sealed and dated, and match to that object rather than the brand book: the brand book describes an intention, the badge is what people have already seen. Leave the production file with the printer who ran it, so the reorder is a rerun and not a redevelopment.

Engraving removes material. It cuts into the plate and the result is the colour of what is underneath, or of an infill. It is permanent because it is subtractive, and limited to that: a laser can mark a photograph, but in a single tone, so two brand marks each at their own colour values are difficult and full-colour content is out of reach.

Printing adds material instead: full colour, both marks at their own values, and with layered white ink, elements built up above the surface. That is what connects door signage to accessibility, because raised tactile characters and braille are built the same way, layer on layer, in the same run as the graphic. The 42 microns above is a normal graphic print, not a braille dot; a tactile dot is built over many more passes, to the height the code requires.

If your plates carry braille, treat it as a code deliverable rather than a design element. The instrument governing a Dubai project is the Dubai Universal Design Code, and the dimensions, mounting height, character size and dot geometry come from the code and are confirmed with your authority. If the plates are for a school, nursery, clinic or hospital, the requirement comes from that authority's own rules and the project's fire strategy rather than from a supplier, so have the specification verified and ask for the documentation before anything is produced. Common questions

What is the best material for event badges?
Aluminium if the badge should read as premium and survive a night of handling, acrylic if thickness or a cut shape is part of the design, PVC if it needs to be a card on a lanyard. Choose by duty cycle rather than by look, since all three carry the same artwork.
Are magnetic name badges better than pin badges?
On tailored or fine garments, yes: nothing pierces the fabric and the badge moves between outfits, which is often the difference between a badge worn and one left in a drawer. Magnets add thickness behind the garment and some wearers cannot use them, so keep a pin version in the pack.
Can you print onto brushed aluminium without losing the metal finish?
Yes, and the exposed metal is usually the best part of the design. Ink goes only where the artwork calls for it, over a printed white base so colours are not pulled towards the metal. The stack is around 42 microns, so the brushed grain still shows wherever the artwork leaves clear.
