Metal & Aluminium Printing in Dubai
Sun Studio prints directly onto aluminium, stainless steel and coated metal at our Al Quoz studio. The ink is cured onto the sheet itself, so a printed metal panel keeps the material's own surface — brushed, mill or coated — instead of being hidden under an applied graphic.
It is used across UAE signage and industrial work: sign faces and fascias, machine and equipment plates, door and room plates, control panels, decorative metal and branded fabricated components.

What we can print
"Metal" covers surfaces that behave very differently under ink, and the finish matters more than the alloy:
- Powder-coated aluminium — the friendliest case. The ink bonds to the powder coat, which is a stable, uniform ground.
- Anodised aluminium — a hard oxide layer with its own characteristics; usually printable, worth testing.
- Mill-finish and bare aluminium — clean metal with no coating, where preparation matters most.
- Brushed stainless steel — where the grain direction shows through the print and becomes part of the look.
- Lacquered and pre-painted sheet — a print onto the lacquer, so the lacquer governs adhesion.
- Name plates, machine plates and labels — small parts printed in batches.
- Fabricated and cut components — printed after cutting and folding rather than before.
Printing capabilities
What suits your job depends on the finish and on where the panel ends up:
- Direct UV printing — cured onto the metal with nothing laminated over it.
- White ink base — essential on bare, dark or reflective metal if colour is to read true rather than pick up the substrate.
- Print without white — colour laid straight onto brushed or mill finish so the metal shows through and the grain reads under the image.
- Full-colour photographic work — at sign and panel scale.
- Raised and textured effects — including tactile detail on plates.
- Varnish — gloss or matte over selected areas.
- Surface preparation — degreasing, and an adhesion promoter suited to metal where the substrate calls for it.

Bare metal or coated metal
This is the question that decides whether a metal job is straightforward or needs testing, and it is worth answering before anything is ordered.
Coated metal
Powder-coated, lacquered and pre-painted sheet is the easier case. The ink is not really bonding to metal at all — it is bonding to the coating, which is a stable, uniform, slightly porous ground designed to be adhered to.
The consequence is that the coating's quality is what matters. A well-cured powder coat is an excellent surface; a contaminated or under-cured one is a poor one, whatever the metal underneath.
Bare metal
Mill-finish aluminium and bare stainless are smooth, non-porous and often carry rolling oils or handling residue. The surface offers little for ink to hold onto and the residue sits in the way, which is why degreasing and, frequently, an adhesion promoter matter here more than anywhere else.
Bare metal is also reflective, so colour printed without a white base takes on the substrate. That can be exactly the effect you want on brushed stainless — or a problem, if a brand colour has to be right.

What to send before we can quote
Metal is quick to assess once we know the finish:
- Panel dimensions and thickness.
- The metal — aluminium, stainless, mild steel, brass.
- The finish — bare, mill, brushed, anodised, powder coated, lacquered. This is the key fact.
- A photograph — finish is easier to see than to describe.
- Quantity, and whether the parts are identical.
- Artwork, and whether the metal should show through or be covered with white.
- Indoor or outdoor, and any cleaning or chemical exposure.
- Whether the parts are already cut and folded, since printing happens after fabrication.

Technical considerations
Metal shares glass's basic problem — smooth, non-porous and easily contaminated, so adhesion turns on the surface finish, cleaning and pretreatment — with an extra complication: most metal that arrives here is not really metal at the surface. It is a coating, and the coating is what the ink meets.
What decides the outcome:
- The coating, not the alloy — on powder-coated or lacquered stock, adhesion is a property of that layer. A good coat is a good ground; a poor or under-cured one will fail regardless of the aluminium beneath it.
- Oils and residue — rolling oils, fingerprints and cutting fluid are the most common cause of failure on bare metal. Parts are degreased before printing.
- Pre-treatment — adhesion promoters formulated for metal are standard practice on bare and difficult stock. Not every panel needs one.
- Reflectivity — bright and mirror finishes bounce light through the ink and shift colour. White underneath is what controls it.
- Anodising — the oxide layer varies with the process and the seal, so anodised stock is worth a test piece rather than an assumption.
- Forming after printing — bending or folding a printed panel puts the ink film under strain at the bend. Fabricate first, print second.
- Outdoor exposure — sun, heat and washing all bear on how a printed panel holds up, and Dubai is a demanding case. For exterior work we test rather than promise.
