Signage Printing in Dubai: Wayfinding, Braille & Façade

Signage printing in Dubai usually arrives as two jobs sold as one: a graphic printed onto adhesive vinyl, then that vinyl applied to a blank panel. Sun Studio removes the second job. The artwork is UV printed directly onto the finished sign material — wood, brushed aluminium, acrylic, glass, composite panel — so the ink is bonded into the surface of the panel rather than a film stuck on top of it.

That single change is what makes a whole estate hold together. A floor of a Dubai office, a clinic, a mall unit, a museum or a stadium needs wayfinding, room and door plates, braille and tactile plates, safety and evacuation panels, monoliths and façade lettering, often on five or six different materials. Printed from one press, on one colour profile, they match. Sourced piecemeal across suppliers and substrates, they do not.

Why print directly onto the sign instead of applying vinyl?

Because the graphic becomes part of the panel rather than a layer sitting on top of it. Applied vinyl adds a visible edge, a seam that can lift at corners, and a surface that ages at a different rate to the material underneath. On a wayfinding set installed across a building, those small differences read as inconsistency.

Sun Studio has been printing direct since 2011, and the layer stack is specific: an adhesion promoter at roughly 2 microns, a white base at about 12 microns, CMYK plus spot colour at around 18 microns, and a varnish that is UV cured at about 10 microns. Just over 40 microns in total, bonded and cured hard before the panel leaves the press.

Every panel runs the same three stages. Pre-treatment — cleaned, degreased and primed for adhesion, using the Modico ModiTreat, which combines four pre-treatment technologies in one unit. Print — white base, CMYK, spot colour. Post-treatment — varnish, UV cure, tested. That sequence is what lets the same brand red land identically on oak, on anodised aluminium and on frosted glass.

What does a full signage printing package in Dubai cover?

It covers every printed element in the building, not just the reception logo. When a facilities manager or interior contractor awards a signage pack, the scope typically runs across seven groups — wayfinding through to advertising signage — all of which Sun Studio produces in-house:

How are braille and tactile signs made in the same pass?

They are built up in ink, layer by layer, on the same press that prints the graphic. The Direct Color Systems UV84 flatbed lays down layered white ink to raise braille domes and tactile lettering, then prints the visual layer over and around it. There is no separate operation of drilling a plate and gluing in plastic beads, and no second supplier.

The practical consequences matter on site. There is no separate insert to work loose — the tactile element is built up as part of the panel itself. Colour and tactile geometry are set in one file, so a room-number set stays consistent from the first plate to the last. And because the UV84 prints on flat and textured stock, braille signage across the UAE can sit on the material the interior designer actually chose — a wood-veneer plate, a brushed metal plate, a solid-surface plate — rather than on the standard photopolymer blank that is usually forced on the project.

Which signage material works best in each zone of a building?

Match the material to the environment first, then keep the print process constant across all of them. Traffic, cleaning regime and light exposure decide the substrate; the press and the colour profile stay the same whichever one is chosen. A rough allocation for a typical Dubai building or retail estate:

• Reception and executive floors: wood veneer, solid timber or brushed metal plates — warm, and the print sits flush with the grain
• Corridors and back of house: composite and aluminium panels for impact resistance and easy cleaning

How does outdoor signage in Dubai differ from interior signage?

The substrate and the finish specification change; the process does not. External elements — monolith sets, park and campus directories, illuminated façade lettering, plaza totems — carry heat, glare and dust loads that interior plates never see, so material selection and the post-treatment varnish are agreed before anything is printed.

Direct print helps most here. There is no film edge for wind-blown sand to catch, and no adhesive line to soften in the Gulf summer. On illuminated lettering and light boxes, printing on the panel itself keeps the graphic optically clean when it is backlit, and a layered white ink base controls how much light passes through the colour.

What should a signage brief include for an accurate quote?

Give the supplier a zone-by-zone schedule rather than a logo and a count. Most quoting delays on a signage pack come from missing substrate and fixing information, not from the artwork. A signage pack that can be quoted and produced without back-and-forth contains these seven items:

• A schedule listing every sign type, quantity and location by zone or floor
• The substrate intended per zone, or an instruction to advise — with any interior finishes the signage must match
• Tactile and braille requirements: which plates need them, and the dome, spacing and character-height specification
• Sizes and fixing method per type: standoff, adhesive, screw-fix, post-mounted or track-mounted
• Brand colour references as spot colours, plus any critical colour that must be matched rather than converted
• Indoor or outdoor per zone, including backlit or illuminated elements
• Phasing: what is needed for handover, and what will be reordered later as tenants and departments change

How do you keep signage colour consistent when reordering later?

By keeping the whole pack on one press with one profile, and by ordering reprints from the same source. Colour drift in signage almost never comes from the print itself — it comes from a floor being reordered eighteen months later from a different supplier on a different substrate, which then sits in the same corridor as the original.

Because Sun Studio prints direct onto the finished material, a spot colour is profiled once per substrate and reused. The white base at roughly 12 microns is what makes that possible across materials of different tone: on dark timber, on brushed aluminium, on frosted glass, the colour is printed onto a controlled white ground rather than onto the material's own colour.
