UV Printing Cost in Dubai: What Actually Drives the Price

Nobody in this industry publishes a price list, and there is a reason: the object decides the cost. Here is what moves a UV printing quote up or down, and how to get an accurate number fast.

Printed glass panels on the UV flatbed at Sun Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai — the once-per-job setup that shapes every quote

Ask three Dubai print houses what UV printing costs and you will get three different answers — or, more often, three requests to "share the details on WhatsApp." That is not evasion. A UV print is priced the way a tailor prices a suit: the same process produces a fifty-dirham job and a fifty-thousand-dirham job, and the difference is decided by the object, not the machine.

Sun Studio has been quoting this work in Al Quoz since 2011 — on glass, bottles, walls, acrylic, metal and most things in between. This guide sets out what actually moves the number, so you can read any quote you receive, compare two quotes fairly, and give a printer what they need to price your job in one reply instead of five.

Every quote is two costs, not one

Whatever the process, a printing price is always two numbers added together: a cost that happens once per job, and a cost that repeats per piece. Traditional methods carry heavy once-per-job costs — screens, plates, colour setup — which is why they quote minimum order quantities: someone has to absorb the setup, and at small quantities it swamps the unit price.

UV printing is digital, so the multiplying part of that setup disappears. There is no screen per colour and no plate per design; a new artwork is a new file. That is why Sun Studio quotes one-off samples and short runs at all — the economics that make fifty pieces impossible for a screen printer do not apply.

What does not disappear is the once-per-job work that has nothing to do with tooling: checking your artwork, profiling colour for the material, preparing the surface, and loading the object. That is the part of a UV quote that makes a single piece cost more per unit than a hundred pieces — not a hidden setup fee, just work that happens once whether the run is one bottle or a thousand.

The six things that move the number

When we price a job, these are the questions being answered. Every one of them moves the quote, and none of them can be guessed from a product name alone — which is why a photo and a dimension get you a real price faster than any amount of description.

  • The material and its preparation. Glass, metal and coated surfaces need cleaning, degreasing and usually a pre-treatment or primer before ink goes anywhere near them. A surface that arrives ready to print costs less than one that needs preparation — and skipping preparation is how prints peel, so it is not a corner worth cutting.
  • White ink. On clear glass, dark metal or coloured acrylic, colours only read correctly over a white base layer printed first. That is an extra pass and extra ink. It is also the difference between artwork that pops and artwork that disappears into the surface, which is why we flag it rather than quietly leaving it out to quote lower.
  • Coverage and build. A small logo uses less ink than edge-to-edge artwork; flat colour uses less than a raised, textured or braille build that is printed in multiple passes. Ink is priced by what is actually laid down, so a bottle with a raised emblem costs more than the same bottle with a flat one.
  • Quantity. Per-piece price falls as quantity rises even without tooling, because the once-per-job work spreads across more pieces and because repeat loading gets faster with a jig. It falls steeply over the first few hundred pieces and gently after that.
  • The shape of the object. Flat and gently curved items run on the flatbed. A cylinder — a bottle, can or tumbler — runs on a dedicated cylindrical press that rotates it under the head. A wall does not come to the studio at all: the printer travels to it. Same ink, three different day's work, three different prices.
  • Artwork and deadline. Print-ready vector files with defined colours cost nothing to prepare. A low-resolution logo that needs redrawing, or a job that must jump the queue for an event date, adds real hours — and honest quotes say so up front.

The same job, cheap and expensive

The clearest way to see these factors work is to price the same object twice. A run of clear glass bottles with a one-colour logo on one face is close to the bottom of the range: one loading, modest ink, no white needed if the mark is dark and the glass is displayed against light.

Now specify the same bottles with full-wrap artwork, a white underlay so the colours hold against the liquid, and a raised tactile emblem. The bottle now runs on the cylindrical press, carries three times the ink in up to three separate layers, and each piece spends several times longer under the head. Same bottle, same studio — a multiple of the price, and worth every fils when the bottle is the product.

This is why any price published without seeing the job is either an average that will be wrong for you, or a teaser for the cheapest possible version of the work.

What to send for an accurate quote in one reply

A quote is only as fast as the information behind it. Send these six things — a WhatsApp message covers all of them in two minutes — and a serious print house can give you a real number the same day:

  • A photo of the item, or the item name and material — "frosted glass candle jar" beats "jar"
  • Dimensions, and for bottles and cans the diameter or a photo with something for scale
  • Quantity — and whether it will repeat, since reorders price differently
  • The artwork as it exists now, even if unfinished — the file state decides preparation time
  • Where the piece will live: indoors, outdoors, handled daily, dishwasher, spirits behind a bar — durability is specified, not assumed
  • The date it is needed by

How to compare two quotes fairly

When quotes for the same job land far apart, the specification is almost always different — not the margin. Before comparing numbers, check whether both include surface pre-treatment, whether white ink is in or has been silently dropped, whether a protective varnish is included for items that get handled or washed, and whether you get a printed sample on the actual material before the run commits.

A lower number that skips pre-treatment is not the same job at a better price; it is a different job that fails sooner. The questions above take a supplier two minutes to answer, and how they answer tells you as much as the number does.

Common questions

How much does UV printing cost in Dubai?
There is no standard rate, because the object decides the price: the material and its preparation, white ink, ink coverage, quantity, the object's shape and the artwork's readiness all move it. Send a photo, dimensions, quantity and artwork to a print house and you should get a firm same-day quote — Sun Studio quotes on +971 4 346 7422 or info@sunstudio.ae.
Is there a minimum order for UV printing?
At Sun Studio, no. UV printing is digital, so there are no screens or plates to pay off, and a single sample runs the same process as a production batch. A one-off costs more per piece than a run, because the once-per-job work of artwork checks, colour profiling and surface preparation lands on one unit instead of spreading across many.
Does white ink cost extra?
It adds a pass and ink, so yes — but on clear glass, dark metal or coloured surfaces it is what makes colours read as designed instead of vanishing into the substrate. If one quote is cheaper and does not mention white, ask whether it was included before comparing numbers.
Why do UV printing quotes for the same job differ so much?
Usually because the specifications differ: one includes pre-treatment, white ink, varnish and a printed sample, and the other quietly leaves them out. Ask each supplier the same four questions — pre-treatment, white, varnish, sample — and the numbers usually explain themselves.

Prices in this industry are not secret; they are specific. The number belongs to the object, and any studio that has printed for a while can put a firm figure on yours in a day once it has seen it. Send the six details above and ask the four comparison questions — that is the whole method, and it works on us as well as on anyone else.
