Screen Printing Minimums and Setup Costs in the UAE: Why MOQs Exist
Where the minimum order quantity actually comes from, what is inside a setup charge, and which jobs still belong to screen printing.

You asked for 50 units and were told the minimum is 250. Nobody is being difficult. Screen printing carries a fixed cost that is spent before the first piece prints, and it does not shrink when your order does. Divided across 50 units it dominates the price. Divided across 5,000 it disappears. The minimum order quantity is simply the point at which the division stops looking absurd.
The part worth understanding is that the minimum belongs to the process, not to the printer. Screens, pad printing plates and hot foil dies are physical objects made for one specific artwork. A digital direct-to-surface process has none of them, so there is no tooling cost to recover and 50 units are as viable as 5,000.
What follows: what sits inside a setup charge, the arithmetic behind your unit price, the costs buyers forget until the reorder, and where screen printing is still cheaper.
Why does screen printing have a minimum order quantity?
Screen printing pushes ink through a tensioned mesh whose open areas are blocked with emulsion everywhere the artwork should not print, and one screen carries one colour. Before a single unit moves, someone separates the artwork into those colours, outputs a film positive for each, coats a screen with light-sensitive emulsion, exposes it through the film, washes out the image, mounts and registers it against every other colour to a fraction of a millimetre, mixes ink to the specified Pantone and runs test pieces until a strike-off is approved.
All of it happens once, and identically, whether the order behind it is 50 pieces or 5,000. The supplier has one place to recover it: your order. A minimum order quantity is the quantity at which that recovery stops being the largest number on the invoice.
A second colour repeats most of that list, which is why colour count moves a screen printing quote far more than it moves a digital one.
What is actually inside a screen printing setup cost?
A screen printing setup fee is not an administration charge. It is a sequence of skilled operations that must be finished before anything sells, and every step below repeats per colour, and repeats again if the artwork changes.
Two of the steps below deserve particular attention. Make-ready consumes real units, so a short run needs spare blanks that a long run absorbs unnoticed. Reclaim decides what your reorder costs.

- Screen coating with emulsion, exposure, washout and drying
- Mesh selection and tension suited to the ink and the substrate
- Mounting and registration of every screen on the press
- Ink mixing to a Pantone reference, then adjusting under the working light
- Make-ready: test pieces run and scrapped until the strike-off is approved
- Reclaim afterwards, stripping emulsion so the frame can be reused

The arithmetic that drives your per-unit price
Every printed job has two costs. One is fixed and paid once: the setup. The other is variable and paid per piece: ink, press time, handling and the item itself. Your unit price is the variable cost of one piece, plus the setup divided across the quantity.
That division is the whole story at low volume. The same setup spread across 5,000 units instead of 50 carries one hundredth of the burden per piece, while the variable cost barely moves. The identical job from the identical supplier can look expensive at 50 and cheap at 5,000 with nothing dishonest in the quote. A falling price on a quantity break sheet is mostly this arithmetic rather than a loyalty discount, though buying material in larger quantities can contribute as well.
The same effect explains why an extra colour hurts at low volume and barely registers at high volume.
Pad printing plates and hot foil dies follow the same logic
Screens are the most familiar example, not the only one. Pad printing needs an etched plate per colour, plus a pad, an ink cup and its own registration. Hot foil stamping and embossing need a metal die cut for that artwork, machined before anything runs.
The structure is identical every time. A physical object is made for one artwork before the first piece exists, and its cost is spread across the run. That is why every tooled process quotes a minimum. Establish in writing who owns the tooling once you have paid for it.

- All of them: new artwork means new tooling, not an edit

What actually removes the minimum order
What a digital process removes is not all preparation. It removes the preparation that multiplies: the per-colour and per-design work. With no screens, no plates and no dies made for a specific artwork, there is nothing artwork-specific to amortise, and that is the cost that sets a minimum order quantity. Digital direct-to-surface UV printing images straight from the file: ink is jetted from a printhead on to the item and cured instantly by ultraviolet light. There are no separations, so full-colour artwork prepares no differently from a one-colour logo, and a second colourway is a second file rather than a second make-ready.
The rest of the preparation is real, and it is fair to call it setup. The item needs a jig so it sits square and repeatable under the head. The substrate needs pre-treatment, because glass, metal and coated plastics absorb nothing and adhesion has to be built chemically. That work is priced. What it does not do is multiply: it belongs to the item and the substrate rather than to the colour count or the design, and it is not repeated on the reorder as long as the jig and the pre-treatment stay the same. That is what removes the minimum order. Not the absence of all setup, but the absence of the setup that multiplies.

The setup costs buyers forget until the reorder
Reordering. Screens are usually reclaimed after a run, because mesh frames are working stock rather than an archive. If yours were reclaimed, the second order pays setup again. Ask before the first run whether the screens will be held.
Colour matching across separate runs. Two runs mean two ink mixes, two make-readies and possibly a different mesh. Spot colour drift between batch one and batch two is a common complaint, and it shows most when both batches sit on the same shelf. A digital press re-reads the same file through the same profile, so the reorder tends to match.
Holding stock you did not want. Buying 250 to get the 50 you need means storing 200 pieces carrying a date, a guest list, a sponsor or a logo that will change. Warehouse space in Dubai is not free, and the lowest unit price is not always the lowest project cost.

Real jobs, and what the quantity did to the method
Fifty glass bottles for a gamer's birthday, the artwork built up in relief so it could be felt. A screen route to that relief means high-build ink laid in passes, and each pass carries its own screen, its own registration and its own make-ready, all of it landing on fifty pieces. Digitally, 50 is a run, and the relief comes from layered ink rather than tooling.
One hundred qahwa cups for a Dubai wedding. Split a hundred pieces across two designs and a tooled process needs two sets of make-ready to cover them. Digitally it is a file change partway through the run.
One thousand aluminium cans in two days for PRO TECHnology. Volume was not the constraint there. The calendar was. With no screens to make, expose and register, a whole block of front-end work came out of the schedule. Artwork preparation, fixturing and post-treatment still take time; making tooling no longer does. The same logic covered 1,450 flat perfume bottles for Qatarat Al Ward, ganged across the flatbed, and 5,000 aluminium VIP badges.
When screen printing is still cheaper, and you should use it
Screen printing is not obsolete, and a supplier who tells you it is has stopped advising and started selling. On a long, stable run of one or two flat spot colours, on a flat or gently curved substrate, with artwork that will not change, it is very often the lower cost per unit. The setup is divided by a large number, and the variable cost of each piece afterwards is low.
It also does something a digital stack does not: a screen lays a thick, opaque ink film in one hit, which is what a solid spot colour wants on flat plastic or textile.

How to ask for a quote you can actually compare
Most confusing quotations are confusing because setup is buried inside the unit price on one bid and itemised on another. Send every supplier the same short brief and the comparison sorts itself out.
Send it to a screen printer and a digital printer at once. If the fixed side of the screen quote exceeds the entire digital quote at your quantity, you have your answer. At ten thousand pieces in one colour you will probably get the opposite.
- Quantity now, and the realistic repeat schedule
- Colour count, Pantone references, and whether gradients are required
- Whether anything varies per unit: names, numbers, dates or codes
- Substrate, grade and finish, plus geometry: flat, cylindrical or recessed
- Setup itemised separately from the per-unit price
- Whether screens, plates or dies are stored or reclaimed, and who owns them
- The price at your quantity and at the next quantity break
- A sample on the actual production item before you commit
