Cylindrical & 360° Printing in Dubai

Sun Studio prints 360° around cylindrical objects at our Al Quoz studio. The item is mounted and rotated against a fixed printhead, so the artwork is laid down as it turns and wraps the whole body with no seam, no join and no label edge.

It is how bottles, cans, tumblers, jars and cups get decorated when a label will not do — because the shape is awkward, because the design has to run continuously, or because the run is too short to justify sleeves or screens.

What we can print

Anything that turns cleanly on its own axis is a candidate. In practice that means:

Printing capabilities

What is available depends on the profile and the material:

The object is held on the bed and turned against the head. That rotation is what makes a seamless wrap possible.

Straight-sided or tapered

The profile of the object decides more than the material does. It is the first thing we look at in a photograph.

Straight-sided

A true cylinder keeps a constant distance from the printhead all the way round and all the way up, which is the ideal case. The printable band can run the full height of the straight section, and artwork is prepared as a flat strip whose width equals the circumference.

Cans, straight bottles, tumblers and most jars fall here.

Tapered, shouldered and oval

As soon as the body tapers, flares at the shoulder or is oval rather than round, the surface no longer holds a constant distance from the head as it turns.

That does not rule it out — a great deal of fragrance work is shaped — but it does mean the printable band has to be defined deliberately, usually over the straightest part of the body, and the artwork planned to fit it. Send a side-on photograph and we will tell you where the band falls.

How it works

Step 1Send

Photos, dimensions, material, quantity and artwork.

Step 2Review

We work out the printable band from the profile and tell you how the artwork should be set out.

Step 3Sample

We print your actual item so you can see the wrap and the colour before a run.

Step 4Produce

The batch is jigged, printed, checked and packed.

Technical considerations

Cylindrical printing adds a variable that flat work does not have: the object is moving. Everything else follows from keeping that rotation true and the surface at a constant distance from the head.

What decides the result:

Common questions

Can you print all the way around a bottle?
Yes, on cylindrical items. The bottle is rotated against the printhead so the artwork wraps continuously with no seam and no join. On tapered or shaped bottles the printable band is defined over the straightest part of the body.
What objects can you print?
Glass bottles, aluminium cans and bottles, PET and plastic bottles, tumblers and drinkware, qahwa and glass cups, and straight-sided jars and candle vessels. Anything that turns cleanly on its axis is a candidate.
Can you print on tapered bottles?
Often yes. A taper changes the distance between the surface and the head as the bottle turns, so the printable band is defined deliberately rather than assumed. Send a side-on photograph and we will tell you where it falls.
Is there a minimum quantity?
No screens and no plates means no minimum in the usual sense. We print single items as samples and short runs as production.
Can you print on plastic bottles?
Yes, though plastics vary. Some — polypropylene and polyethylene in particular — are low surface energy and need pre-treatment for ink to hold. Tell us the plastic type and we will confirm.
Will the print survive a dishwasher?
That depends on the item, the coating and the cycle, so we test rather than promise. Tell us the item is going to be washed and we will print a sample and check it before a run.
Can you personalise each piece with a different name?
Yes. Because there is no screen or plate, every item in a batch can carry different text — which is why event and gifting work often comes here.
Should the items be full or empty?
Empty, normally. Printing before filling and capping is cleaner and easier to handle. If your items are already filled, tell us and we will advise.
What artwork do you need?
Artwork prepared as a flat strip whose width matches the circumference of the printed band, vector for logos and type with type outlined, and high-resolution raster for photographic work. Flag which elements must stay opaque.

Have something cylindrical to print?

Send us photographs from the front and the side, the diameter and height, the material and the artwork. We will tell you where the printable band falls, whether it needs testing, and what a sample would look like.
