Aluminium Can and Body Spray Printing in Dubai

A body spray can is a hard object to brand well. It is a thin aluminium cylinder, often with a coloured basecoat, and the artwork has to run the whole way round it without a visible join. The conventional answers are a wrapped label or a shrink sleeve. Both work. Both also introduce a seam, an edge that can lift, and a second supplier with its own lead time and its own tooling cost for every design you run.
Direct printing takes the label out of the process. The can is loaded onto a cylindrical printer, rotated under a UV printhead, and the artwork is laid straight onto the metal in a single continuous pass. The ink cures under UV light as it is applied, so the can comes off the machine dry and handleable. There is no wrap, no adhesive, no shrink tunnel and no seam — the artwork simply ends where it began.
Why brands use labels and sleeves, and what that costs them
A shrink sleeve is a printed plastic tube dropped over the can and heat-shrunk to fit. It gives full coverage and photographic colour, and at high volumes it is very cheap per unit. A pressure-sensitive label is simpler still: printed, die-cut, and applied by machine or by hand.
The costs are structural rather than obvious. Both routes need artwork committed to a plate or a cylinder before anything is printed, so every design carries its own set-up. Both add a layer of material over the can, which means an edge — a sleeve has a bonded seam, a label has a leading and trailing edge, and in the heat of a Dubai warehouse or a car boot those edges are where failure starts. Both also send the can out to a separate converter, which adds time to a launch that may already be late. And if you want four designs in a run of a thousand, you are paying four set-ups against very small quantities each.
Direct printing changes that arithmetic. The artwork lives in a file, not on a plate, so a second design costs a file change rather than new tooling. That is the whole reason short multi-SKU runs behave differently on digital UV kit than they do on conventional packaging lines. The same logic sits behind screen printing minimum order quantities.
How a full 360 degree wrap is printed on a can
The can is mounted between chucks and rotated at a controlled speed while the printhead stays fixed above it. Instead of the head moving across a flat sheet, the substrate moves under the head. The machine has to know the exact diameter, because circumference determines how much artwork fits in one revolution and where the image has to meet itself.
Sun Studio runs an LSINC PeriQ360 for this work. The wrap closes on itself, so the join is a registration problem rather than a physical seam — get the diameter and the rotation right and there is nothing to see. Straight-walled cans are the easy case. Cans with a shoulder, a taper or a domed base need the printable band defined honestly at quoting stage, because the head follows a cylinder, not a profile that changes as it goes.

Four aerosol designs from one set-up
Ajmal Perfumes, one of the GCC's long-established perfume manufacturers, ran a full aerosol job with Sun Studio: four designs — Amber Tide, Mystic Bliss, Tropical Mango and Pear Hug — printed full-wrap directly onto the aluminium cans.
The point of that job was not the printing of any single can. It was that four SKUs came out of one set-up, with brand colour and a gold logo holding consistently from can to can and design to design. On a sleeve route those four SKUs would have been four separate tooling charges and four separate minimum quantities from the converter. Here they were four files.

1,000 cans in two days for Beautyworld
PRO TECHnology, Sun Studio's own parent group, needed a giveaway for its stand at Beautyworld at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The requirement was 1,000 full-wrap aluminium body spray cans across several artworks, and the stand date was not moving.
They were produced in two days, with no minimum order and no setup charges. That is the case direct printing genuinely wins: a fixed event date, several artworks, and a quantity too small to interest a packaging converter but too large to do by hand. Gold and metallic brand colours on a metallic can
This is the genuinely difficult part of can printing, and it is worth being direct about it. UV inkjet builds colour from CMYK plus white. It has no metallic ink. A gold logo is therefore printed as a colour that reads as gold — a warm ochre-to-brown blend — and how convincing it looks depends heavily on what sits behind it.
On a bare or brushed aluminium can that works in your favour: the metal's own reflectivity shows through and does much of the work, so the printed gold looks metallic because the substrate is metallic. On a can with a solid coloured basecoat the underlying shine is gone, and gold printed straight onto it reads flatter than a foil or a metallic sleeve would. Where a design needs opacity or accurate colour on a dark or coloured can, white ink is laid down first as a base and the colour printed over it — an extra ink layer that shows up in what drives a UV printing quote.
The honest advice is to send the can and the artwork together and ask for a printed sample before committing a run. Gold and metallics are the one area where an on-screen proof tells you very little.

Filled and pressurised cans are handled differently from empties
An empty can is a straightforward object: light, easy to jig, forgiving. A filled aerosol is a pressurised vessel with propellant inside it. It weighs more, so jigging and rotation speed change. It cannot be knocked about. It is stored and moved to its own safety requirements rather than sitting on a shelf with the acrylic.
LED-UV curing helps here more than anything else. The cure is cold — the ink is polymerised by UV light, not by heat — so a filled can is never warmed in the process. That is the same property that lets Sun Studio print sealed candles and coated bottles without affecting what is inside them.
Two practical points. Tell us at quoting stage that the cans are filled and what the fill is, because it affects scheduling and handling, not just price. And expect the valve and actuator areas to be masked out of the printable band.
Adhesion, coatings and what actually holds
Aluminium takes UV ink well once it is clean, but almost no can reaches a printer as bare aluminium. Most carry a basecoat, a lacquer or an overvarnish, and it is that coating — not the metal — that the ink has to bond to. A silicone-bearing slip additive in an overvarnish is a common cause of poor adhesion, and it is invisible until you print.
This is why a sample can from the same batch as the production run matters. Cans from a different supplier, or the same supplier's different coating lot, can behave differently. Adhesion is tested on the actual can before quantity is run, and where a coating rejects ink the answer is surface preparation rather than more ink. Once cured and properly bonded, the print is a hard polymer film on the can. It handles normal retail and transit use. It is not indestructible under deliberate abrasion, and a body spray that lives in a handbag for a year will show wear on the highest points of the can before anywhere else.
When direct printing is the wrong answer
At true mass-market volumes direct printing is not the cheapest route, and we would not pretend otherwise. If you are running tens or hundreds of thousands of identical cans for retail distribution, printed or sleeved cans ordered directly from the can manufacturer will beat per-unit direct printing, and by a wide margin. The tooling cost that looks painful across a thousand units disappears into nothing across a very large run, and the converter's line runs faster than any digital printer.
Direct printing wins on three things specifically: short runs, multiple SKUs from one set-up, and speed. A launch sample set, a private-label range being tested before commitment, four fragrance variants at a thousand each, an event giveaway with a fixed date. A national retail rollout of a single SKU is not on that list.
The sensible pattern for a growing fragrance brand is to use direct printing to test the range and the artwork, then move the SKU that sells to sleeves once the volume justifies the tooling.

What to send for a quote:
- Two or three sample cans from the batch you intend to run — same supplier, same coating lot. Adhesion is tested on the actual can, not on a similar one.
- Can diameter and height, and the height of the straight-walled printable band if the can has a shoulder or taper.
- Whether the cans are empty or filled and pressurised, and what the fill is.
- Artwork as vector (AI, EPS or PDF) or at 300dpi, laid out as a full 360 degree wrap at the correct circumference. Tell us where the join should fall if it matters.
- Brand colours as Pantone references, and flag any gold, silver or metallic element separately.
