On a cylindrical UV press, in three stages, onto the finished cup. Sun Studio does not print the transfer and apply it — the ink is laid onto the glaze and cured in place.

Pre-treatment comes first. The cup is cleaned, degreased and primed for adhesion on the Modico ModiTreat, a German unit that combines four pre-treatment technologies in one and is what gives the finished print its scratch and alcohol resistance. Printing runs on the LSINC PeriOne from the USA, a cylindrical press built for bottles, jars and tubes: it holds the cup on its axis and prints a seamless 360-degree wrap, which is why a repeating pattern has no visible join. The same press handles the glass cups in a matching gift set. Post-treatment is a varnish pass, UV cured and tested.

The stack on a finished cup is thin and deliberate:

Where should the logo sit on a curved qahwa cup?

Can you print white, black-on-black and metallic-look effects on porcelain?

Yes, with one qualification on the metallic. White is the layer that makes the rest possible. On a coloured, matte or black cup, CMYK alone would sink into the body colour, so a white base of around 12 microns is printed first and the colour goes on top of it. That is how a brand palette stays the same across a white cup, a black cup and a glass tumbler in the same gift set.

Black-on-black and metallic looks are built from spot colour and varnish rather than foil, so what you get is the appearance of metal rather than a metallic ink or a foil stamp. A tone-on-tone effect comes from printing a gloss pass over a matte surface so the mark only appears when the cup catches the light — restrained, and it reads as a considered finish rather than a logo stamp. Raised and textured effects are available on flat components through the Direct Color Systems UV84, which lays layered white ink and prints braille and raised texture, useful for the box, coaster or tray that comes with the cups.

There is no decal edge to catch a sponge and no wrap to shrink back, because nothing was applied over the glaze — the ink is bonded to it.
