Large Format Glass Printing in Dubai: A Specifier’s Guide
How direct UV printing on large glass panels works, where it belongs in a fit-out, and what to send us before we can quote your panel schedule.

Sun Studio prints artwork directly onto flat glass panels at our studio in Al Quoz, Dubai. The ink is laid on the glass itself and cured with UV light — there is no vinyl, no film and no laminate carrying the image. This page is written for the people who specify and buy printed glass: architects, interior designers, fit-out contractors, glass and glazing companies, signage companies and the brands behind them.
It covers what the process can and cannot do, the decisions that change the result on transparent glass, the difference between surface-printed glass and fired ceramic frit glass, and exactly what information lets us price a panel schedule instead of guessing at it.
What Is Large Format UV Printing on Glass?
Large format UV printing on glass is a direct digital printing process. UV-curable ink is jetted straight onto the glass surface and cured instantly by UV light as the printhead passes, so the image is a thin cured layer bonded to the glass rather than a graphic stuck onto it.
“Large format” here means panel-scale work — partition leaves, door panels, splashbacks, feature panels and shopfront glass — rather than glassware or small decorative pieces. The panel is laid flat on the bed, registered, and printed in one pass of the machine, which is why the artwork you supply needs to be built at panel size from the start.
Because nothing is applied over the top, there is no film edge to lift, no bubbles under a graphic and no seam where two sheets of vinyl meet. That is the practical reason most fit-out work moves to direct printing: a large plain panel with a printed graphic reads as one surface.
Can You Print Directly Onto Glass?
Yes. UV printing can be applied directly to many types of flat glass. Whether it performs over time depends on the specific glass, not on glass as a category — adhesion is affected by the glass type, any coating on the surface, how clean the surface is, the ink system, whether a pretreatment is used, and where the panel is going to live.
Glass is smooth and non-porous, and print adhesion depends strongly on its exact surface condition, coatings, contamination, cleaning, pretreatment and the ink system, rather than on any mechanical key. Clean glass is actually high surface energy and wets readily; contamination and coatings are what cause the problem, not the glass itself. That is workable, and it is routine — but it is the reason a serious glass job starts with knowing what the glass actually is. Coated glass is the case that catches people out. Low-E, mirrored, anti-reflective and some solar-control products carry a functional coating on one face. Printing onto the coated face is a different problem from printing onto the uncoated face, and on some products it is not appropriate at all. If a panel is coated, we need to know which face carries the coating.
Printed Glass in a Fit-Out: Where It Actually Gets Used
Most of the printed glass leaving our studio goes into interiors. These are the applications that come up repeatedly on Dubai and wider UAE projects:
- Office glass partitions and meeting rooms — pattern, gradient or brand artwork printed across the leaf, giving privacy at seated height without resorting to a plain frosted band.
- Manifestation with intent — the safety marking that has to be on a full-height glass leaf anyway, designed as part of the scheme rather than applied as a strip of film afterwards.
- Feature and reception panels — a single large graphic behind a reception desk or along a corridor, printed on glass so it keeps the depth and gloss that a printed board cannot give.
- Retail and hospitality interiors — back-of-counter panels, display glass, and branded elements inside stores, restaurants and hotel interiors.
- Glass doors and shopfront elements — printed door leaves and internal shopfront glass carrying logo, pattern or wayfinding.
- Splashbacks and vertical surfaces — printed glass used as a wipeable decorative surface in kitchens, pantries and washrooms.
- Exhibition and event builds — short-run printed glass elements for stands and activations where the finish has to look permanent.

Printing on Clear Glass: Why White Ink Decides the Look
Colour printed onto transparent glass with no white behind it will read as a tint, not as artwork. The substrate supplies no white base, so whatever is behind the panel — a wall, a corridor, the room beyond — shows through the ink and shifts every colour on top of it.
White ink is how that is solved, and it is a design decision rather than a default. Three approaches cover most work:
- Full white backing — white printed behind the whole image. Colours come out close to how they look on a printed sheet, and the panel becomes opaque where the artwork sits.
- Selective white — white printed only behind the parts that need to hold their colour, such as a logo or a block of text, leaving the rest of the panel transparent. This is what gives the printed glass look most interiors are after.
- No white at all — colour laid straight onto the glass so the panel stays translucent and the artwork behaves like a tinted or stained layer. Right for some schemes, wrong for a logo that has to stay legible.

First Surface or Second Surface?
On glass, the same artwork can be printed on the face you touch (first surface) or on the back so that it is seen through the glass (second surface, also called reverse printing). It is worth deciding early, because it changes the artwork.
Second-surface printing puts the thickness of the glass between the viewer and the ink, which gives depth and gloss and keeps the print away from the face that gets cleaned. It also means the image must be mirrored, and the layer order reverses: what would be printed first on the front is printed last on the back, and white goes down over the colour rather than under it.
Which one is right depends on the panel, how it is installed, which face is accessible, and whether the back of the glass will be visible or fixed against a substrate. Tell us how the panel is being installed and we will tell you which way round it should be printed.
Direct Printing vs Vinyl and Film on Glass
Applied vinyl and frosting film are legitimate products and they are the right answer on plenty of jobs — particularly on glass that is already installed, on rented premises, and where the graphic is meant to be changed or removed later. Direct printing is not a replacement for film; it is a different specification.
The differences that matter to a specifier:
- Method — film is a printed or cut sheet applied to the glass. Direct printing puts ink on the glass with nothing over it.
- Appearance — film sits above the surface and has an edge and a thickness. Direct print sits in the surface plane, so a large panel has no visible film boundary and no join across the middle.
- Where it happens — film can be applied on site to glass that is already installed. Direct printing needs the panel flat on the bed at our studio, which means it belongs in the procurement programme before the glass is installed.
- Changeability — film can be removed and replaced. A direct print is part of the panel; changing the graphic means a new panel.
- Detail — both can carry photographic artwork. Direct printing avoids the trapped air, lifted corners and seams that large film installations have to be detailed around.
UV Printed Glass Is Not Fired Ceramic Frit Glass
This is the distinction most worth understanding before printed glass goes into a specification, and it is the one that gets blurred in the market.
Fired ceramic frit printing uses an ink containing glass frit and pigment. The panel goes through the tempering furnace, and the frit fuses into the glass surface and becomes part of it. That is the process behind exterior façade glass, spandrel panels and weather- and abrasion-exposed architectural glazing, and it is done by the glass processor as part of manufacturing the panel.
Direct UV printing — what we do — lays a cured ink layer onto finished glass. Nothing is fired, so it is applied to glass that has already been toughened, and it does not survive a tempering furnace afterwards. It is a decorative and branding process for interior and protected applications.
The practical consequences: if a panel needs toughening or laminating, it must be processed before it comes to us, not after. And where a project calls for printed glass in an external façade, in a structural application, or anywhere the print itself is expected to perform as part of the building envelope, fired ceramic frit from the glass processor is the correct specification — not surface printing. We would rather tell you that at enquiry stage than after a panel schedule has been ordered.

Does Glass Need Primer Before UV Printing?
Not always, and it depends on the glass and the application. Some glass takes UV ink well as it is. Other glass — particularly coated products, and anything going somewhere that will be cleaned hard, exposed to moisture or handled constantly — benefits from an adhesion promoter or pretreatment applied before printing.
Adhesion promoters for glass are a standard part of the industry rather than something exotic: they are formulated specifically for non-porous substrates such as glass, ceramics and metals, and are designed to be visually undetectable on a finished panel. Whether one is needed on your panels is a question about your glass, and it is answered by testing it, not by assuming.
Anyone who tells you that every glass panel needs primer, or that no glass panel does, is describing a policy rather than the material.
Why We Ask to Test the Glass
On a straightforward interior panel in known glass, testing is often unnecessary. On the jobs below, we would rather print a sample first than commit a panel schedule:
- The exact glass specification is unknown, or the glass is being supplied by a third party.
- The glass is coated — Low-E, mirrored, anti-reflective, solar control.
- The panel will be cleaned frequently or with chemical cleaners, as in a kitchen, washroom or clinical space.
- The installation is exposed to moisture, condensation or direct sun.
- The application is outdoors or semi-outdoors.
- The finish is unusual — textured, patterned, acid-etched or back-painted glass.
- The programme is long, the quantity is large, or a failure would mean replacing installed panels.
Artwork Requirements for Printing on Glass
Artwork is where most glass jobs lose time. What we need:
- Built at panel size — artwork set up at the finished panel dimensions, or at a clean proportional scale, so nothing has to be resampled upward.
- Vector where the artwork is vector — logos, type, patterns and line work supplied as vector (AI, EPS, PDF) hold their edges at panel scale. Type converted to outlines.
- High-resolution raster where the artwork is photographic — sized for the panel, not a web image scaled up. A photograph that is sharp at A4 will not be sharp at two metres.
- White handled deliberately — if parts of the design need white behind them, supply that as its own layer or tell us which elements must stay opaque. White is not something to guess at.
- Transparency kept as transparency — areas meant to stay clear glass supplied as genuinely transparent, not as white fill.
- Bleed and tolerance — where artwork runs to the edge of the panel, include bleed. Tell us about holes, cut-outs, hinge positions and edge polishing so nothing important sits where it will be drilled or hidden by a fixing.
- Colour expectations — send brand references and say which colours are critical. Colour on transparent glass behaves differently from colour on white board; the more critical the match, the more a printed sample is worth doing.
What to Send Before We Can Quote
We do not publish maximum panel sizes, because the honest answer depends on the panel, the artwork and the job. Send the following and you will get a real answer rather than a range:
- Panel dimensions — width and height of each panel.
- Glass thickness, and whether the glass is toughened, laminated or annealed.
- Glass type and any coating — clear, low-iron, tinted, mirrored, Low-E, acid-etched, textured — and which face carries the coating.
- Quantity, and whether panels are identical or each one is different.
- A photograph of the actual glass, particularly if it is already cut or already on site.
- The artwork, or a visual of what is intended.
- The application and location — partition, door, splashback, feature panel, shopfront — and where in the building it is going.
- Indoor or outdoor, and whether the panel is exposed to sun, moisture or heavy cleaning.
- Any resistance or testing requirement the project specification calls for.
- Programme dates — when the glass is available to us and when it has to be back on site.
