How to Convert an AI Image to a Vector File in Canva Pro for Printing
AI artwork arrives as a PNG or a JPG, and pixels do not enlarge well onto a glass panel or a sign. How to vectorise it in Canva, when vector is the wrong answer, and why a vector file and a print-ready file are not the same thing.

AI-generated artwork now turns up in briefs for logos, illustrations, packaging concepts, signage and custom printing. It almost always arrives as a PNG or a JPG, which is a raster image: a grid of pixels at a fixed size.
Enlarge a low-resolution raster image onto a glass panel, an acrylic sign or a wall graphic and it goes soft. For logos, illustrations, text and simple shapes, converting to vector makes the artwork far easier to scale and to prepare properly for UV printing in Dubai. Here is how to do that in Canva, and, more usefully, when not to.
Why AI artwork arrives in the wrong format
A raster image stores a fixed number of pixels. Scaling it up does not create new detail, it just makes each pixel bigger, which is why edges soften and text furs at the corners.
A vector file stores shapes as mathematics instead: paths, curves and fills. Enlarging it recalculates the shapes at the new size, so an edge stays an edge whether the artwork is printed at 100 mm or across a two metre panel. On large-format work that difference is the whole job.
Most AI image tools output raster because they generate pixels. So the conversion step is not a formality, it is the bridge between what the tool produced and what a press can use at size.
How to convert a PNG or JPG to a vector in Canva
Canva offers image-to-vector conversion, and it is worth being precise about what is what, because the names get used interchangeably online.
Canva's own tool is the AI Vectorizer, which converts JPG and PNG artwork into SVG. Canva documents it on its image vectorizer page.
Vectorify is a separate, premium third-party app available inside Canva that traces an uploaded image into editable vector shapes. It is not Canva's own feature, and it is worth knowing which one you are using when a result looks different from what a tutorial showed.
SVG download requires a paid Canva plan. Exporting your design as SVG rather than PNG or JPG is a Canva Pro option, so the free tier will vectorise on screen but not hand you the file your printer wants.
The sequence itself is short: upload the AI-generated PNG or JPG, run the vectorizer, let it analyse the colours, edges and shapes and rebuild them as vector paths, then inspect the result before you do anything else.
Inspect the conversion before you trust it
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the file is usable.
AI-generated images carry small imperfections that a tracer faithfully reproduces: soft or doubled edges, invented characters in anything resembling text, stray specks read as shapes, and colour banding turned into dozens of near-identical fills. A trace does not clean artwork up. It converts whatever is there, including the flaws.
So open the result and look at it at print size, not at thumbnail size. Remove stray paths, simplify areas that have been split into far more shapes than the design needs, correct colours, and rebuild any text properly rather than leaving traced letterforms in place. Then export as SVG.
What vector conversion is good for, and what it is not
Converting to SVG does not automatically make an image better for printing. It makes a particular kind of image better for printing.
It works well for logos, icons, line drawings, illustrations, patterns, simple AI artwork, signage graphics and text-based designs. Anything with defined edges and flat or simple colour is a good candidate.
It works badly for detailed photographs, realistic portraits and artwork built on complex gradients or photographic texture. Tracing those produces a heavy file made of thousands of paths that looks worse than the original and is harder to print. Those are better kept as high-resolution raster artwork at the physical size required.
The honest test is not the file format. It is whether the artwork is made of shapes or made of tone.
A vector file and a print-ready file are not the same thing
This is the distinction that causes the most rework. A vector file describes the artwork. A print-ready file describes the artwork at the final size, in the right colours, with the fonts handled, transparency resolved, bleed where the process needs it, and prepared for the specific printing method.
For UV printing the right file depends on what is being printed. A logo going onto acrylic, glass, metal or a bottle usually benefits from clean vector artwork, because the edges and the text stay sharp. A photograph going onto a large glass panel is often better supplied as a high-resolution raster file at the physical size it will be printed.
Sending a vector and assuming the job is prepared is the same mistake as sending a 72 dpi JPG and asking whether it is high resolution. The question is always what it is being printed onto, and how big.
What UV printing asks for beyond the vector
Depending on the effect, the artwork itself may need to carry more information than the picture:
Clear substrates — artwork for acrylic or clear glass may need a separate layer defining where white ink goes, because process inks are transparent and take on whatever is behind them.
Reverse printing — printing on the back face, read through the material, needs the artwork mirrored and the layer order inverted. There is more on why the artwork goes on the back in the awards guide.
Raised and embossed effects — raised UV printing needs artwork identifying which elements take the extra ink or varnish layers, as a separate layer rather than a note.
Cylindrical work — 360 degree printing on perfume bottles and other containers needs the design set to the printable height, the circumference, the seam position and the shape of the vessel.
None of that is visible in an SVG. It comes from knowing the application, which is why showing your printer the material and the finish beats sending a file and asking if it is high enough resolution.
A workflow that holds up
Generate or create the artwork, and export the highest quality PNG or JPG the tool will give you. Upload it to Canva. Vectorise it if the artwork is the kind that suits it. Clean and check the result at print size. Export as SVG.
Then send your printer both the original raster and the SVG if you are not sure which is better, and confirm the material, the final dimensions and the printing effect before anything goes into production. Two files and one sentence about the application save more time than any amount of guessing at the format.
For branding work where colour, fine detail, transparency or adhesion matters, ask for a physical sample. A file that looks sharp on a laptop can look very different enlarged onto glass, acrylic, wood or metal, and small type on a plaque or a bottle shows every defect the screen hid.
