A Raised Floral Monogram on Gold Acrylic

An oval piece of gold acrylic printed with a cherry-blossom wreath and a monogram R that stand off the surface.

Sun Studio built the relief in white ink, printed the design in full colour over it and sealed it in clear gloss, at our Al Quoz studio in Dubai.

Pale flowers on a gold sheet

UV ink is translucent, so whatever sits under it shows through. On gold acrylic, a pale pink printed straight onto the sheet picks up the metallic colour beneath it and turns muddy, and a white petal stops being white.

This design is nearly all pale colour: pink and white cherry blossom, a scalloped border in pink, white and deep red, and a monogram R in white with a red outline. It is also raised, so the flowers, the border and the letter read by touch as well as by colour.

White first, colour second, gloss last

The gold sheet does half the work. Every area without ink is left bare, so the metallic acrylic becomes the background between the wreath and the monogram.

White ink goes under every flower, the border and the letter, which keeps the pinks and whites true. The same white is then built up in layers on those areas, so they rise off the surface. Colour is printed over the raised white, and a clear gloss over the design gives it the look of enamel.

Building the relief in cured ink

Raised printing builds height in cured ink. The same place is printed again and again, and UV light cures each layer as it lands, so the next one can be laid straight on top. Nothing is pressed into the acrylic and nothing is glued on.

Height is press time, because each layer is another pass, so the relief goes where it shows: the petals, the scallops and the strokes of the R. We can build up to about 6 mm of relief, and a piece like this needs only a small part of that. We built relief the same way on the oval acrylic base of an Etihad Rail model.

Relief you can see in raking light

In raking light the relief is obvious: the petals and the R throw small shadows, and the gloss reads like enamel while the gold background stays clean.

The same build works on acrylic box lids and trays, with a name or initials in English or Arabic. Personalised acrylic boxes and trays sets out the finishes, the artwork and what to send.
